The Profile

Mano Negra were a French band formed in Paris in 1987 by Manu Chao, fusing punk, ska, reggae and Latin sounds into a high-energy style known as patchanka. They released influential albums including Patchanka, Puta’s Fever, King of Bongo and Casa Babylon before disbanding in 1995.

Formed in Paris in 1987 by Manu Chao with Antoine “Tonio” Chao and drummer Santiago Casariego; French band blending punk, ska, reggae and Latin styles (“patchanka”); landmark albums Patchanka (1988), Puta’s Fever (1989), King of Bongo (1991), Casa Babylon (1994); renowned for ferocious live shows (In the Hell of Patchinko, 1992) and the Out Of Time video anthology; disbanded in 1995; notable songs include Mala Vida, King Kong Five and Out of Time Man; undertook the Cargo 92 ship project playing South American ports.

DeBaser’s reviews hail Mano Negra’s invention of patchanka, a combustible blend of punk, ska, reggae and Latin grooves. Patchanka kick-starts it all; Puta’s Fever is praised as the creative pinnacle with standouts like King Kong Five and Peligro. Casa Babylon is framed as their densest, most global statement. Live documents (In the Hell of Patchinko, Out Of Time) capture their explosive, improvisational power.
