After three long and exhausting years of silence, Lorenzo 'Jovanotti' Cherubini, on the brink of 40, with an increasingly long and bushy beard, returns with his tenth album. Buon Sangue, this is the title of his 'Kill Bill', as he defines his new work, after intense collaborations with various artists, including Planet Funk, Stefano Fontana, Michele Canova, and Celso Valli, this new musical world of Lorenzo presents itself as more electronic, more real, more f.u.n.k.y. It immediately received a good approach from the critics, who define Good Blood as destined to remain in the annals of Italian music.
The limited edition of Buon Sangue contains two CDs, on one disc we find the original version and the finished work containing the acclaimed single (Tanto)³, on the other CD 'Extra F.U.N.K. (fratelli uniti nel kaos)' we have another point of view from which to see the work done by Jova, a more real, more funky approach that many will love.
But let's get to the point, Buon Sangue is truly a beautiful album, the main concept is experimentation, both from a musical perspective, with a new approach towards electronics, and from the perspective of words, strange lyrics, made of tongue twisters and nonsense phrases, it's all less “commercial”, less predictable. The band is felt less, even though guitars are present, everything is however united by an electronic and funky groove.
Sure, the old Jovanotti, has not disappeared, in fact, we find traditional songs perhaps “inevitable” such as 'Mi fido di Te', 'La Valigia', 'La Voglia di Libertà', 'Una Storia d'Amore' that never hurt, but surely don't express the true sense of the album, we hear the full renewal in tracks like 'Falla Girare', 'Mani in Alto', 'Coraggio', 'Bruto', 'Mi Disordino', the latter being the final piece of 12 minutes perhaps fully conveys the sense of the work. The innovations are found also/especially by enjoying all the additional disc Extra F.U.N.K., it is indeed for this reason that I recommend purchasing (if you have 20 euros available) especially the limited edition.
Finally, it is no coincidence that De Gregori complimented Lorenzo for the beautiful work and strangely for the apt title of the album. Do not expect a funk punk electronic album for headache sufferers like Liars, but simply a more mature, more sophisticated, and perhaps more real Jovanotti. Perhaps it will truly remain in the history of Italian music, perhaps even Dj Francesco will change one day... perhaps.
"Buon Sangue" is a mature, aware, energetic, and above all original album that marks Jovanotti's move towards electronics.
"Un buco nella tasca," with its Gorillaz-inspired production and powerful electric guitar interlude, is the best episode of the album, deserving more live presence.
Jovanotti's 'Buon Sangue' never truly disappoints, yet never fully excites.
The album offers some highlights, but overall feels somewhat inconsistent.
