Outsider music: classics of American classical music (22) - John Philip Sousa - Washington Post March (1890) Sousa - Washington Post March There had to be a spot for the ultimate march creator, John Philip Sousa. A life spent writing music for band.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (26) - Ned Rorem - Violin Concerto (1984) Ned Rorem (Violin Concerto) A neo-romantic composer far from modernist, yet talented, he has composed a lot throughout his career (which ideally is not over yet, although at 97 I find it hard to believe he will publish anything else...), including this violin concerto that is quite appreciated in the community.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (27) - Milton Babbitt - Three Compositions (1948) Milton Babbitt - Three Compositions One of the toughest and purest modernists/avant-gardists of the 20th century, a pioneer of serialism and electronic music.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (28) - Vincent Persichetti - Symphony No.6 "For Band" (1956) Vincent Persichetti: Symphony No.6 "Symphony for Band" (1956) An American composer and educator of the last century, he spent almost his entire life teaching at Juilliard in New York, particularly famous for his piano works (including 12 sonatas) and for his compositions for band, like this one I posted.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (29) - Wallingford Riegger - Dance Rhythms (1955) Wallingford Riegger: Dance Rhythms Op.58a (1955) Another important American composer, who was part of the first wave of modernists, alongside Cowell and Ruggles. Over time, he returned to more classical forms (like Cowell), but his significance has endured.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (31) - Peter Mennin - Symphony No.7 (1963) Symphony No.7 "Variation-Symphony" - Peter Mennin Another great representative of American neoclassicism from the mid-20th century, alongside Schuman he was probably the most important symphonist. Vigorous music, beautifully written, with an unmistakable American accent. He was also the president of the Juilliard School in New York (succeeding, coincidentally, Schuman) until his untimely death in 1983.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (35) - Virgil Thomson - Louisiana Story (1948) Virgil Thomson: Louisiana Story (1948) Among the great American composers of the 20th century, Thomson is the one who looked most to the past, especially to the hymns and folk songs brought by the Pilgrims to the New World.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (36) - Roy Harris - Symphony No.7 (1952) Roy Harris "Symphony No 7" Eugene Ormandy One of the most classic American composers of the '30s and '40s, part of that neoclassicism with strong American hues that garnered many followers during that period, achieving great results as well.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (37) - Morton Gould - American Symphonette No.2 (1939) Morton Gould American Symphonette No 2 Another famous composer of 20th century America, his characteristic was not being fully rooted in classical tradition, but rather flirting almost always with light music (as can be heard in this piece, where there are evident danceable jazz vibes).
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (38) - David Diamond - Symphony No.1 (1940) Symphony No.1 - David Diamond A neo-Romantic author of considerable talent, he wrote many symphonies (eleven) and other orchestral works.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (41) - Alan Hovhaness - Symphony No. 66 "Glacier Peak" (1992) Alan Hovhaness - Symphony No. 66, Hymn to Glacier Peak, Op. 428 [Rockwell Kent] Another peculiar composer who has gained significant public success over time, the Armenian-American Hovhaness boasts one of the largest catalogs of the 20th century, having written 67 (!!!) symphonies. His style is primarily tonal, bucolic, and flowing, with many references to Armenian folklore. It must be said that it can be a bit dull and repetitive, but the most successful compositions turn out to be extraordinarily evocative (like this one). In the States, the debate about the true quality of his music continues even today: for many, these are easy compositions for the easily pleased, while for others, he is a genius. Time will tell, etc.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (42) - Conlon Nancarrow - String Quartet No.3 (1987) Conlon Nancarrow - String Quartet No. 3 Another eccentric composer, famous and appreciated by other great composers (Ligeti was an admirer) for his works, especially those for player piano. He had an adventurous life: he fled to Mexico due to his affiliation with the Communist Party; they would have brought him back in exchange for an official repentance, and he refused, so back to Mexico. Nevertheless, he continued to compose in relative silence, with critics rediscovering him only in the 1980s. A remarkable figure.
Outsider music: classics of American classical (44) - Christopher Rouse - Gorgon (1984) Christopher Rouse: Gorgon (1984) As I was about to post this listening experience, I realized that Rouse passed away a few months ago, at just 70 years old... one of the most highly regarded and best contemporary "classical" composers. Yes, because our man always composed in a neo-Romantic style (in the 21st century, you might say??), but he had a particular talent, and in cases like this, being "out of time" is not a flaw.
Outsider music: classics of American classical music (45) - William Grant Still - Symphony No. 2 (1937) Symphony No.2 in G minor "Song of a New Race" - William Grant Still Perhaps the most famous Black composer of the first half of the 20th century, certainly the one who best managed to combine neo-romanticism and jazz. Some of his works, like the first symphony that I had already posted, are still performed regularly in the States.
