"French and American documentaries about the dwarf are much more useful, much more instructive."-----> Well, but what does that have to do with it? A film doesn't have to explain these things, and The Caiman doesn't even pretend to do so. It's simply a visual and narrative work; it doesn't have the value of a voice of truth or a documentary.

@dave: To be fair. Berlusconi is as interesting a character as Napoleon, although I have the feeling he is of a significantly lower caliber. Both are assholes anyway. @Bjork: Actually, Il Caimano doesn't mainly talk about Berlusconi. It mainly talks about Italy.

Even in the early 1800s, all anyone could talk about was Napoleon Bonaparte, especially after the coronation. Yet the painting "Incoronazione di Napoleone" by Jacques-Louis David is not crap just because it's about what everyone was talking about. On the contrary, that painting is stunning.

"horrible instead The Caiman" Which, in my opinion, is one of his best films. And in my judgment, the disdain for the dwarf has nothing to do with it.

And what does this have to do with the judgment on Moretti as an artist? Even a director can have political preferences, and if he feels very strongly about them, he can express them as Moretti does. So what?

Never seen one of his films. Damn, I'm missing several pieces of this early cinematic period.

I am not aware that Nanni Moretti has pursued a political career. He has always spoken about politics, being critical of both the Italian right and left. As far as I know, he has never engaged in politics.

In my opinion, the best prog band in history, on par with Genesis.

It's a film with an almost sacred flavor, due to its pacing in storytelling and its lingering on the characters' emotions, delving deep into them. A film in which Moretti succeeds in the difficult art of laying bare feelings and placing them at the center of the film without coming off as pathetic; it's a film focused on virtuous performances from the actors, playing between speech and silence. It's the work of a mature and inspired director, who may not reach his peak with this film, but who also doesn't take a misstep. A film that likely adds even more variety to Moretti's filmography, which has won at Cannes, a festival in which I still hold some trust.
