Easycure, I am quite dismayed by the statements you sometimes make about groups that likely belong to musical genres that you find "profane." These statements clash with the intelligence with which you express your opinions in other cases. This album is precisely one of those records that do not conform to the absence of content in favor of form as the only appealing element, which seems to be what you criticized in those groups. Furthermore, from a formal standpoint, the album has its unique objective flaws, as it is not very well recorded and the electronics used are still not employed with much awareness. I don’t understand what Ramazzotti has to do with it.

The problem is not that I don't like dialogue. The problem is: I don't like the dialogue in which it's believed that I take on the role of a conservative or whatever else. I am not conservative towards Porcupine Tree’s music; I am not fond of the psychedelic period just because they used to do psychedelia and now they do pop. They could even make salsa and merengue if it were cool and I liked it. But the problem for me is something else, and I've highlighted it: it's now believed that to do pop, one must be mediocre and just focus on the sound. I don’t think that's true; however, I believe Wilson is reasoning this way, or (as I have always argued) beyond a few exceptions (Even Less or Waiting are two nice pop-rock pieces), he is unable to handle pop in an original and interesting way. Because many of his recent pieces seem amorphous and contrast with the beauty of other pieces on the same album. This makes me suspicious: it makes me suspect that Wilson is making too many albums in too little time (as the current record market forces), and that if he took a bit more time, the quality of his albums would come out like the great ones of the past. It makes me suspect that he is forcing himself to be so mediocre to make a bit more money from showbiz.

@ lethe: Purist maniac and fanboy with blinders on, you’re the one who gets annoyed every time someone criticizes something about Wilson, but what the hell are you, his firstborn son? A band can change, and if it changes for the worse, I’m allowed to criticize it. Wilson can’t do pop; when he makes pop songs, they suck for me, just like for many others. Do you like it? Great, keep it to yourself and stop whining by throwing out bullshit that I’m not in the slightest bit involved in (because I’m not an early fan of Porcupine Tree, in fact, I’m not a fan, I just like them). I will continue to listen to the most significant songs from their latest albums and skip the others, I’ll listen to this album too, and if I like it, I’ll play it again, I’ll tell everyone it’s cool, and I’ll get off a bunch. Ah, I almost forgot: go fuck yourself.

Well, Sylvian was just an example for the discussion. Sylvian's music has always enjoyed a great deal of female admiration, I wonder why.

Of course, we can all care for each other; in fact, it wasn't me who defined the various and more critical words as an insult to the group. I actually like well-made pop, and that's why I say that in my opinion, Wilson often isn't capable of creating interesting pop but rather follows the trend of modern sound. One who knows how to handle pop is Sylvian, in my opinion, while Wilson needs to be mediocre to make pop because it’s just not in his nature. In short, songs like "Four Chords That Made a Million" are truly terrible due to the banality of the rhythms, the voice, the way they are arranged, even though the sound is now of unreachable quality.

Who knows why this story of "finding the spiritual path" is always associated with deprivation, as if it were synonymous with moral goodness, inner honesty, and peace with oneself. It seems to me to be an enormous load of nonsense, as well as something stemming from a certain lack of culture and clarity. I know a person who had reduced themselves to a state of almost total fasting and sleep deprivation, and who, about two months ago, attempted to take their own life. Different ways of thinking, but I believe that for a Westerner to embark on such a path is a sign of stupidity. In the Far East, people are educated from a young age in certain types of thinking and restrictions.

In my opinion, Stupid Dream is a 4 at best, just like In Absentia. Lightbulb Sun only gets a 4 from me because of that fucking masterpiece called Russia on Ice, which is one of PT's cornerstone tracks, along with a few other great ones like Hate Song or Feel So Low, while the other songs are sometimes almost irritating in how deliberately easy listening they are. I struggle to even give Deadwing a 3, considering it sounds almost entirely like a work that only has its overly polished and unbelievably digital recording to commend it. They are increasingly leaning towards pop in the modern sense of the term, and very little remains of their glorious and unjustly unknown past. I believe that Wilson could potentially still make great records, if only he would take a bit more time between the release of one and the next, instead of churning out a stream of mediocre ones.

Masterpiece. Just for the lyrics alone it would be a masterpiece (although Punisher once said that Lou Reed will NEVER be remembered for the lyrics... whatever), the music is sometimes phenomenal, other times a bit less so. But even when it's not as strong, the talent in the voice and the lyrics makes up for the lack.

Are you crazy to suggest such unknown and experimental stuff?
