Last thing: shine, if you read my posts you'll understand that I analyzed their music precisely from the perspective of the time it was created. And that's also why I said that they can't be commercial music, due to the extent of the innovation.

Very thoughtful and definitely reasonable is Shine's post. I largely agree, except for the excessive constraints you mentioned, which I find minimal; however, they cannot not exist if a label is producing an album for you, especially when the tracks come from the mind of such an eccentric artist. In my opinion, these were not constraints imposed for commercial purposes, but rather for the sake of musical coherence. That's all.

And there's a nice fresh one, in his fansite Gilmour writes about Barrett: "He was good and consistent, in addition to being health-conscious. Never touched a cigarette. Until that unfortunate day when he stumbled falling into an 80-liter tank of lysergic acid, it was after the Piper. Then he went mad."

Damn Jim, you won't believe it, but it hit me too. And I'll tell you more. Robert Fripp, interviewed by the Mirror, stirs up scandal: "Yes, I was writing music with the Crimsons to sell, I was pressured by the FBI who ordered me to stop that psychedelic interlude on moonchild after just 12 minutes. I was set up."

It had turned on, but it changed color every two seconds and flashed wildly, expanding and contracting. :-)

Even before Piper and during, he made extensive use of LSD. Otherwise, there's no way he would have written lyrics like that.

Then limiting and conditioning the production of someone like Barrett can only be a good thing, more than a business action, because someone like that, if you didn't explain to him how albums work, could very well come up with a song that repeats the same martial bass rhythm for 70 minutes. This is the conditioning they have undergone. They rightly had to limit their madness, not being on stage, but in the studio.

Imagine what commerciality can mean for someone who has lost themselves with acid. They might even "feel" that interstellar overdrive is the catchiest song of all time. They might believe there’s a conspiracy against them and that everyone has forced them to write bullshit pop songs. They might think that grandma's dentures invented pop music. You have no idea...

Alright, fine. It doesn't matter. But think about it, even rereading what I wrote. You might change your mind.

Regarding the interviews, I'll tell you that I don't believe a word of what the current Floyd say about this album, the Floyd who don't even perform a single song live (except after his death, on one occasion, thanks) from this album that is clearly not so easily digestible by the masses. And if you bring up Barrett's interviews, I'll tell you that I don't believe him either, if for no other reason than I know the effects of psychedelic drugs.
