Only real musicians (not those with a diploma) truly know what is new and what is not in their music. If they don’t say it, it’s just out of fear and a lack of objectivity. But when they loosen up for a moment, they pronounce the most important things. This is what I learned by reading books with quotes from people like Bowie, Eno, Tchaikovsky, Glenn Gould. Glenn Gould, in particular, made me really understand the music of Beethoven and Mozart because he knew music from the inside. By reading monologues from Lou Reed, I started to grasp the inner spirit of the Velvet Underground’s music. Music that critics comment on from the outside, unable to look at its soul.

I have always believed that the best music critics are musicians. Those who feel music "in their bones." And what is a critic, if not an ordinary listener with the trait of being more informed than a common listener? So yes, I too could be a critic, a music critic. But it makes me smile when someone considers being a music critic an art or a profession. Music can be an art (not always) or a profession (not always).
