Iron Maiden A Matter Of Life And Death
Voto:
The album is great and to those who criticize it, I would like to ask this: what must a band do to avoid criticism? If they stick to their style, you say they're repetitive. If they change genre, then they're not the same anymore. So, what should Iron Maiden do, after twenty-six years of career, to shut you up? There’s a track on this album, The Legacy, that is truly progressive: what was the comment on that track in many reviews? I don’t remember, but it was negative anyway.
Let’s be clear, I’m not addressing the historical detractors of the band, because they are in such a position that, evidently, if they didn’t love them from the start, they can’t love them now that, inevitably, they have aged a bit, both in years and in ideas.
My frustration is directed at us fans, who often think in clichés and criticize a lot because we feel we have to. For example, can you tell me what Different World lacks compared to one of Maiden’s historic openings? Okay, maybe it’s a bit catchier, and for that reason, it might not be liked, but I welcome motivated and reasoned criticisms of this kind, instead of the usual flow of clichés and common places. Or the single, doesn’t it sound like Iron Maiden as much as Fear of The Dark? Okay, maybe it’s not as powerful or evocative... in short, let’s make constructive and serious critiques, not relentless attacks or defenses that only reveal a terrifying lack of critical ability and indecent obtuseness.
In short, forgive my colorful outburst, I don’t want to offend anyone, far from it, but I hope to encourage someone to really listen to their albums and give a balanced and serious judgment, along with a personal opinion.

Bisius, I think you underestimate Slash, a great guitarist. I say this even though I'm not one of the band's fans... but when I hear Sweet Child Of Mine, the solo from Don't Cry, from Patience, from Knockin', I get excited. I don't think we can ignore Slash's skill.

I didn't understand the first paragraph... however, the review, typos aside, is beautifully written and expresses thoughts I share (in addition to being very well written). The album is a masterpiece, a 5 just like Atom Heart Mother (an album that, in my opinion, not everyone has managed to grasp in terms of experimentation and originality), like Wish You Were Here, like The Dark Side Of The Moon, like The Wall, like Animals. In my opinion, however, the first two albums are extremely overrated, as is The Final Cut.
Roger Waters Live in Roma, Stadio Olimpico, 16/06/2006

It must have been fantastic.... I mean, why don't they do a reunion and a tour.... but maybe time passes for everyone. Roger Waters is a genius, that's well known, but the only thing that has always bothered me about him is his failure to acknowledge the contributions of the other Floyds... Gilmour in particular, but also Wright. That's why I can't stand him at times, but deep down, I still care about him because he is a GENIUS.

Another thing: to appreciate the music of the Doors, one must overcome prejudices about their frontman and evaluate him solely based on the songs and the incredible emotions (listen to the slower pieces to get an idea, like Blue Sunday) that his voice manages to convey. I too had to deal with this initial antipathy towards the character, due to the mythologizing of Morrison, the tons of sentimental phrases written on desks and in diaries attributed to him, and the incredible debauchery of his existence. However, once the veil of Maia is lifted, one discovers a singer and frontman among the greatest that rock has ever known (in my opinion, the greatest), a refined poet no less than people like Rainbaud (who was given more consideration only because he didn’t wear leather pants and didn’t sing on a stage), and ultimately a sensitive and cultured man, a victim of the world after all.

Pixelid is right; if it's not an entire concert, you can't talk about one of the best live performances in history. The fact remains that in this collection of live performances, all the pieces acquire a certain something that they lack in the studio... However, to respond to someone, you can say anything about the Doors, that they are eccentric, that they are bizarre, but not that they are not original... no band has done what they did, particularly the blend of rock, poetry, and theatricality hasn't been seen at those levels since. I recommend that skeptics listen to The WASP and reflect on the poetry of the lyrics in English even before reading the precise translation in Italian (which inevitably tends to betray the beauty of the verses written in the original language, Jim Morrison would surely confirm that). Then we can talk about it again.

I totally agree with Tom Traubert. Great review, but I think the album deserves a 5.

It is said "purtoppo" anyway, not "pultroppo." I hope it was just a typing error... the album is horrible to me, a truly dreadful genre in my opinion. De gustibus. For me, Maiden is metal in general; they represent just a certain type of metal (only surpassed in ugliness by power, personal opinion of course).

albi6 I just expressed an opinion, if you like Ligabue then listen to him.
Ligabue Nome E Cognome

The only thing that partially saves Ligabue is that he himself calls his music pop (he has clearly stated this in more than one interview), so in that context, something like that fits in well: alongside Tiziano Ferro, Nek, Neffa, Omar Pedrini, Pierò Pelù, Vasco Rossi, and so on.
