The collection of Australian groups you sent me is fantastic... you’re right to say that Radio Birdman were the princes of that scene (which is quite multifaceted)... however, I believe that talking about garage-punk is very limiting and somewhat misleading, as all those bands were doing a classic rock that was rich in knowledge, intricate, often played with two guitars, with solos... in my opinion, with these kangaroo bands, you can truly grasp the quintessence of rock and simultaneously a beautiful new-wave kaleidoscope (some songs borrow from Patti Smith, others from David Byrne)... the Birthday Party stands apart, they’re exceptional... I’m not quite sure about the connection to grunge... I didn’t know that Arm loved these bands... I know for sure he went crazy for the Solger, who were American, though...

Well, I'll start by saying that Mudhoney's version of Hate the Police is cute, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the original (which is nothing short of moving)... it's a track that’s worth an entire career for how Gary sings with a moan, for the lyrics (significant in indicating the causes of youth unrest and in pointing the finger at parents), for its being pathetic without being self-pitying... simply great rock... the rest of the Dicks’ repertoire is excellent, even if overall they lacked the inspiration and talent of their cousins, the Big Boys... like all Texas hc, the Dicks drew heavily from garage, blues, folk traditions, etc... only to anticipate grunge with their later tracks (those from the mid '80s)... a shoutout to peggiopunx, even if the Dicks were anything but "misanthropic"...
