But how can you say that the Germs sounded bad?! They had the most powerful, fastest, and precise rhythm section of the era, alongside that of Motörhead… they had a singer who couldn’t hold a note, yes… a guitarist who missed notes, certainly… but what beautiful wrong notes! and what flubs! it’s hard to find so much poetry in such distortion elsewhere… Pat Smear, for example, yes, that’s right: Pat Smear, the miserable guitarist of the horrid Foo Fighters… Pat Smear is responsible for some of the most creative, inspired, original, and expressive guitar work in the history of rock: on GI (the only LP by the Germs), no song sounds the same as another… a great intelligence hidden behind a facade of technical ineptitude… there’s a song, Ritchie Dagger’s Crime, with two overdubbed guitars, one loud and crashing, the other melodic, and the effect is one of empathy that a thousand virtuoso performances will never achieve… and then there’s Shoot Down, an improvised noise-blues where Smear makes Gregg Ginn look like crap… only an idiot like me could give GI a 4/5, shoot me! :-)
