As for emotional impact, I don't think... For example: the Germs move me more than the Butthole Surfers... As for artistic maturity, I can agree... But I don’t think it's correct to say they "completely wipe them out," because the foundations of mid-'80s post-hardcore bands are precisely found in the "classic" bands of the early '80s (from California, NY, and Washington)... For instance, I believe that a guitarist like Gregg Ginn (Black Flag) has influenced various post-hardcore (and even noise) guitarists, like Mould and Albini... Anyway, you caught me at a great time: these days I'm listening almost exclusively to early '80s beach punk!!! ;-P

I just listened to it again: an hour wasted, basically. So much craftsmanship, but also so much boredom. They have aged terribly. In the end, I must admit that my favorite grunge album remains the despised Nevermind… The recipe of Soundgarden is: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Melvins, a hint of Stooges, some metal rhythmics, a spurt of pseudo-noise, para-psychedelic licks, all merged into an indigestible cocktail. It has the foul-smelling taste of music that has the potential to engage and shake you and blow your mind, yet instead it leaves you with a puzzled expression. Not quite there...

Well, for me in the early 80s, there were quite a few great hc bands: Germs, Black Flag, Minor Threat, Adolescents, Descendents, Misfits, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys... and many others... and they were not all the same at all!!! :-OOOOOOOOOOOO
