"The true message lies deep within the hippie philosophies; the punk and grunge movements seem to me like almost incoherent and useless alternatives, absolutely anti-ethical." <<<<<< I radically disagree. There is more ethics, more coherence, and more usefulness among punks than among hippies. (as I see it)

Aniel, I agree that Gilmour created a sort of "trade-mark" with his guitar style; as for Piper, I believe Barrett's contribution is fundamental (without overlooking the other three musicians). Astronomy Domine, Interstellar Overdrive: these two tracks alone would be enough to place Barrett among the great guitarists (and composers, let's not forget!) of all time.

Well... for me, there's no comparison between Barrett and Gilmour when it comes to originality, imagination, creativity, genius... I mean, Barrett, with The Piper, immensely expanded the harmonic horizons of music, invented a guitar style that didn't exist before, surreal, cosmic, extravagant, lysergic, dreamlike, etc.... Gilmour, on the other hand, with all due respect, was a mannerist, a good professional, equipped with feeling, taste, and a smooth touch with a creamy tone... but he was much more conventional than Barrett... (this doesn't take away from the fact that the Floyd of the early 70's had a huge influence on much modern psych-rock, from Galaxie 500 to Mercury Rev).
