Don, thank you for the long, detailed, and comprehensive post. I believe I've understood that our divergence of opinions on this matter is mainly based on the fact that I have the flaw of paying too little attention to the lyrics and perceiving the concepts expressed by a band almost solely based on the musical aspect. In any case, I will take your observations to heart: they will be useful to me as soon as I listen to a Love album again! :-)

Yes, I also like the Love, but I remain perplexed: their music (I’m basing this on their classics Da Capo and Forever Changes) seems quite in line with the pop and psychedelic moods of their time (the sixties): harmonious, sophisticated, clean, sweet, soft, sunny, ecstatic music, aimed at expressing the most typical feelings of their era ("love" = love, indeed)... I didn't know that they weren't very successful back then or that there were references to heroin... anyway, I can’t discern that "dark and decadent" side that I notice in other groups of the time, like the VU, the Doors, Nico, Amon Duul, Stooges, and a few others... maybe listening to this Four Sail will change my mind... (in any case, and to avoid misunderstandings, the Love were a great band).

Oh, I didn't remember that Vivis also admired the Misfits! :-D I finally managed to get this album, which is indeed really awesome; it’s maybe less melodic but more powerful than Walk Among Us (which I prefer, in terms of songs).

"If it's true that Love were the West Coast equivalent of the Velvet Underground in terms of innovation, impact, and compositional talent" <<< I have my doubts, anyway great review!
My Bloody Valentine Loveless

These days, I prefer listening to Isn't Anything... but Loveless remains a great album, especially Loomer, To Here, When U Sleep, and Sometime.
