Minutemen We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen [2DVD]
Voto:
Fester, you've touched me, really... you had already told me about this DVD and the related anecdotes (in chat)... what can I say about the Minutemen? Simply immense.
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band Trout Mask Replica
Voto:
"Why is Beefheart a genius while Half Japanese, who make relatively similar music, are rated much lower?" <<< because Fair, despite all his madness, was nonetheless part of a distinct movement of his time (the no-wave, late 70s/early 80s), whereas Beefheart made music outside any trend of the late 60s; moreover, Beefheart had a compositional genius that Fair could only dream of (not due to Fair's limitations, but because of Van Vliet's excellence)...Fair had a more lo-fi, rough, amateurish approach, more "punk"...Van Vliet, on the other hand, was a composer of immense technical skill, a "cultured" musician, not just a simple provocateur (albeit as brilliant as Fair).
Cop Shoot Cop White Noise

I have only listened to the debut of CSC. Impeccable review, well done Don! Very nice, especially the introductory part (where you mention the little-known but valid Unsane); the only thing I don't fully agree with is that "ostentatiously intellectual" referring to Pussy Galore (I agree on Sonic Youth, though).
The Holy Modal Rounders Indian War Whoop
Voto:
In the end, I managed to get it...but it disappointed me quite a bit...better David Peel, definitely...and the Fugs don't impress me much either...it seems to me like a music with some good ideas, but also a bit outdated...nothing compared to the VU, nor to the Red Crayola, nor to Zappa (since he's often brought up when talking about Virgin Forest by the Fugs)...
The Stooges Funhouse
Voto:
Funhouse is definitely a great album, but the "real" Stooges (the ones who profoundly changed the history of rock) are those from the debut album, the Stooges who went beyond the old-school hedonistic enjoyment of the Rolling Stones (which returns powerfully in Funhouse) to evoke states of frustration, apathy, disillusionment, etc... in short, the Stooges who were able to anticipate punk, new wave, indie, and grunge. In any case, from a formal point of view, Funhouse is a remarkable record, there's no escaping it: from Cows to Rollins, this album echoes in much of the hardcore production of 10/20 years later. Compared to the debut, the rhythms are tighter, more martial, but there has also been a certain revival of the good old blues. Clear and pleasant reception.

The Velvet Underground White Light/White Heat
Voto:
Sister Ray alone is worth 5 stars. And if we add Gift... VU & Nico is the father of alternative rock in general; WLWH is the father of that "radical" branch of alternative rock, which has encountered cacophonies, dissonances, noise, extremisms, and breaches of sound barriers. Basically, it’s our daily bread.
