I brought up the legendary Stiff Little Fingers just to say that political activism doesn't necessarily imply hostility towards the musical proposal... in your interesting post, there is a contradiction: first you say that with the Crass only the lyrics matter, and then you talk to me about "experimental and industrial-esoteric solutions"... in the end, what mattered with the Crass? the lyrics or the music? or both? Anyway, it seems we're on the same wavelength: we both view the Crass as a band that is more relevant symbolically/ideologically than purely musically.

@negative: May was neither hyper-technical nor fast... in my opinion, he was a little genius of arrangement (he knew how to embellish the tracks with uncommon class), had good taste, great eclecticism, and above all, did not abuse his undeniable abilities.

@senmayan: in that comment of mine, I wasn't speaking in the first person, but rather relaying what are, generally, the prevailing lines of thought (read: the commonplaces) followed by critics, who consider AOR to be "petty" (in the sense of superficial, flashy, pompous, polished)... "News of the World" was judged (in a fanzine whose name I can’t recall) the best AOR album of the ‘70s, after the one by Boston... then Jazz contains some tracks that can be likened to AOR, like Fat Bottomed Girls for example, a classic example of radio rock... I've only listened to a few Journey songs, but it was many years ago and I don't remember them very well...

I had heard about him as having an extraordinary melodic talent, and instead... well, maybe "jamboree" is his worst album, I don't know... for now I've only listened to this one... hey, wait a second: but what exactly do you mean by "gifted"? It's not that you meant...... :-D

well... I was expecting better... thank goodness for Indian Summer, which saves the day... and yes, in theory, I should like music made with few resources but a lot of imagination... the problem is that here, besides the few resources, the imagination is also lacking... I don't know, from a record like this one, you expect at least some brilliant melodies, slightly off-kilter chords, peculiar rhythms... in short, some clever idea that redeems the technical poverty (a virtue that the Shaggs and Half Japanese had, the mothers and fathers of lo-fi)... good old Calvin, however, doesn’t seem very gifted to me... anyway, thanks for the heads-up, trelly: from now on, when I listen to Indian Summer, guess who I'll be thinking of? ;-P

Mary, try to find some fanzines from that time... they were always considered gaudy, excessive, imitators of Bolan one moment, then Led Zeppelin, then Genesis, then the most trivial disco and synth-pop, and so on... a supermarket band... the worst of a petty genre like AOR... then the lyrics, banal and superficial... not to mention their willingness to switch from one genre to another depending on the trend of the moment... no, critics have never been kind to Queen, unfortunately.

yes, but the critics have always hated them, unlike the Beatles who enjoyed immense acclaim: this is history
