Honestly, you can't mock Maynard, criticize him for the way he sings, and say he ruins the record. It's certainly clear that he's not as prominent as in previous works; in fact, from a production standpoint, in this 10,000 Days, he is more "hidden," except in a few moments. But it's definitely not because Maynard is an alien element; it's due to the path our guys have taken in this album. This is their dimension now—simply a bit more immediate and still incredibly technical at the same time.

The beautiful (or ugly, depending on your point of view) thing about Lateralus is that it deserves at least double the attention compared to Aenima, because one risks considering it inferior. For many, Aenima is seen as better because it’s more emotional, at times more accessible; Lateralus, especially on first listens, is quite challenging!!!! But the technique, the atmospheres, and the dimension it transports you to are unique; I still haven't found any album that gives me these feelings.

I agree with you, indeed, if aenima is the album where they start to distance themselves a bit from everyone, but you can still find echoes of their influences, lateralus is from another planet.
