Neil Young Old Ways

Record label standstill in the early '80s? Come on, besides, the years '84/'85, the period of Old Ways, was one of the greatest in rock history. Interesting review, especially for the behind-the-scenes description of the album's composition. I will get to Old Ways sooner or later, for now, I'm at 28 Younghian albums :)

Too many comments on this page, why is everyone commenting on Socrates today? Did you do some butt-kissing propaganda? The review is very nice, full of adjectives used skillfully, but above all avant-garde impressionist nouns like "astruserie" or "groppone." The group needs to be investigated. (sorry for the nonsense, it's been a tiring day).

I Built To Spill are fantastic, these guys, like Antmo, I immediately queued them up on the mule. But am I wrong or is SubPop putting on quite a show lately?

@Antmo: thanks for the tip about Strunz, I listened to them today, really remarkable, together with Uzeda they might be the most valuable Italian noise band out there right now. If you don’t have it yet, get the previous album "In Culo Ai Lupi", there are tracks that would make many of those faux-alternative old-timers pale who still insist on playing noisy. @TabbaInMaglietta: you can even find APE files on emule, even 400Mb each, no low quality here. @Socrates: my bad, I made a mistake, and then all those out-of-context adjectives, bleah! But come on, the review was fine even without additional comments (I'm saying this to you too, pretazzo delle mie bretelle!).

Oh, thank you thank you for the generous comments. @easycure: don't worry, the garage here isn't the one from the 60s (that's what you meant, right?), rather it's more like the chaos of bands like Pussy Galore and Mudhoney, but with a more post-rock perspective (oh man, I don't make any sense with what I'm writing). @domo: good one, download it, but I warn you that this is a bit (a lot) extreme, maybe give it another chance if the first time you thought it was awful. @Stoopid: these guys are always On, switched on, and when you think they've reached their limit and should cool down, they accelerate and get even angrier, it's incredible. @odra: come on, we all know you like the chaos, nothing like refined jazz-pop. And by the way, of the three Comets albums you got, the one you liked the least is the calmest. You’re not pulling a fast one on us.

:) Well, you can't do that on eMule; there you only find entire zipped discs. Anyway, I just checked Soulseek and they're available. There were even two guys who had them.

Oops, in my eagerness for brevity, I forgot to describe the album, so let me remedy that now: if I had to choose just one genre among the de-generes, I would undoubtedly pick Noise-Rock. The sound is very lo-fi, grainy, and at times cacophonic, the "singing" often boils down to high-pitched screams in the background drowned out by waves of intergalactic distortion. The emotional intensity is violent, almost reminiscent of zenarcade, and the atmosphere is a desolate wasteland of despair. Folks, there hasn't been an album in the last five years (at least among those I've listened to, mind you) that comes close to this magnificence—maybe Each One Teach One, but we're in totally different territory. Of course, to appreciate it, you probably need to have grown up on a diet of noise rock like I did, but nevertheless, the 5 stars are well-deserved; I am convinced of that. The album isn't easy to find; the only store I found in Europe is Volcanic Tongue in the UK (which isn't really Europe...), and for less than 15 euros, it will arrive in under a week. The packaging is cardboard and quite nice, though you can tell it’s very handmade. If you search for it on peer-to-peer networks, you probably won’t find it (also, what do you do on eMule? Type "on" and sift through 9999999 results?), the only way is to ask me directly: my nick on Soulseek is always Festwca (with a capital "F"). Cheers and thanks to all the kind readers, haloa!

Antmo, I’ve never heard of Strunz, maybe just in name, what do they do? Are they any good? As for Dead in the Water, I still haven’t listened to it. The thing is, Under the Stress, while I consider it a great album, I still can’t figure out where the hell it’s going, it’s too all over the place! So I’m a bit afraid to tackle the previous album, which seems like it might be even worse...
