I don't think the use of a term like "master" is so limiting, nor does it imply that Buckley didn't also expand - for many, even improving - the insights of Fred, especially at a vocal level. For instance, Neil Young has always referred to Dylan as his "master," but it is quite clear that he has produced a tide of albums where Bob's influence is practically nonexistent, surpassing his master. Buckley himself, after all, said that Fred Neil was the best songwriter of his generation, if I remember correctly.
