The Eagles Their Greatest Hits, 1972-75

True, Dave: then consider that in America almost everyone listens to music in their cars, and what better music for the average American driving through vast landscapes than the Eagles, a band that has expertly and cleverly (as Pierpaolo rightly states) refined and perfected the country-rock-blues-westcoast template for the masses? As for the greatest hits: they sell incredibly well even today, just like "One" by the Beatles (extraordinarily million-selling even though it certainly doesn’t contain the best episodes of the fab four): it's the safest purchase for people in their 30s and 40s, who are the key to the record market. The same Eagles GH still sells truckloads of copies every year.

Thank you all for the comments. You’re probably right, happypippo. By the way, a few years ago, director Ray Ellis revived some chilling stories about the sessions. Like when Billie first arrived at the studio and was greeted with a standing ovation from the orchestra. But above all, Ellis recounted that when Holiday listened to the recording of "I'm a fool to love you" for the first time, she burst into tears. I think any further comment is unnecessary.

Pierpaolo: I believe that the data and the record you are referring to are only relevant to the American market: there, the album has actually sold almost 30 million copies, and it is about to receive the certification for the thirtieth platinum. This is a certain fact, as in America there is an organization that is quite meticulous about these matters, the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America, whose Bible is the Billboard chart and it is the entity that issues platinum records. An institution so meticulous and annoying that it is often at the forefront of battles against peer-to-peer systems, and Napster knows a thing or two about that. In other places, starting with Italy, the charts are notoriously manipulated. For the record, on a global scale, I believe that the record still belongs to Michael Jackson for the single "thriller," which I think sold around 45 million copies. Moving on to more serious matters, it’s not hard to understand why this is the best-selling album of all time in the States: a mix of epicness and imagery from Marlboro country, for better or for worse.

Thank you, Lewis: indeed, Maclean was always able to provide an important contribution to the mix of the Love, even his Spanish-flavored inserts in FC, however isolated, beautifully stitch that work together. But by then he had already fried his brain in '68, and he wanted to make music inspired by the Bee Gees: I don’t think Lee could have found a better replacement than Donnellan, technically much more gifted and able to revitalize a sound that, after an unrepeatable peak like FC, could only be completely redrawn. Mission perfectly accomplished, in my opinion, on "Four Sail." Cheers.

If you were upset, just imagine how disappointed I am that in that page you dug up, I was completely unfoundedly called out, not to mention that I was also a "victim" of those fakes (even though I never cared much about it, because I basically don't give a damn about voices and things like that).

I was also very sorry about this controversy, Dave, especially because I was called into question in a completely arbitrary manner. I've also encountered pristine reviews "sunk" by fake ones and similar issues: "younger than yesterdays" by the Byrds, both albums by Buffalo Springfield, the self-titled album by Elliott Smith. However, I didn't launch into trials, nor did I go and smear others' reviews with irony and assorted nonsense, as others have done (see the review on Xiu Xiu). That said, I hope Odradek soon returns to writing reviews (he always comments).
