Perhaps it should be specified what is meant by "knowing how to compose." The other day I was listening to "Alien Love Secrets" in my headphones and, aside from "Tender Surrender," which is a masterpiece, the other songs are worth nothing to me compositionally. "Ya-Yo Gakk," in my opinion, is the true manifesto of Vai: lots of guitar tricks, complex riffs, many arrangements, but a "song" for me is something else. The opinion of a mediocre guitarist.
