Are Led Zeppelin progressive? From Hammer of the Gods to Pan Flute? In my opinion, more than the '80s, it was the preceding punk (and everything that stemmed from it, No/New Wave, synth pop, etc.) that shook up the prog wagon. And while I don’t really love punk (well, it would require some distinctions, but I can't be bothered), it put a nice brake on the self-indulgence reached by certain '70s music.

"How can you say that Karma To Burn, Sleep, and OM suck or are boring?" Unfortunately, it’s quite simple: I say it because that’s how I feel. I can give Karma To Burn the benefit of the doubt, since it’s been ten years since I listened to their first album. However, Sleep doesn’t excite me, and, in my opinion, Dopesmoker is not a good album; it’s a nice idea that went wrong. I’m glad this isn’t my genre since I don’t consider it a genre, and I don’t like listening to "a genre." For me, the "genre" I like originated from Kyuss and a bit from the early Monster Magnet. Not from Sleep. So, basically, I'm saying I really don't care if they are considered pioneers, and I listen to the genre without any qualms. And I surely don’t sit there thinking, "Well, maybe this isn’t my music..." because that in itself is an immense load of nonsense. I listen to what I like, and I don’t force myself to enjoy albums just because the stoner/psych/doom manual says Dopesmoker is a masterpiece. The discussion ties back to the factor of objectivity in music, and what I’ve just written disproves your theory on objectivity, don’t you think? With this, I’m not saying you are wrong, but simply that no one is right. I have felt the "genre" more or less for 15 years just like you, but the difference is that I’ve never clung to it; by ’98/’99 I was already tired of the monochromaticity of the proposal. Then I admit that since 2002, the scene has diversified a lot, and for me, it has become a continuous reference to various types of psychedelia. Purely stoner bands no longer make sense to exist. For me, stoner ends with Desert Sessions I/II and maybe the first Unida. Of course, such a statement goes against the aforementioned manual, but that’s how I see it.

These days I've been prompted to compare the singles from this and Siamese Dream. Result: Cherub Rock vs Bullett (sorry, there's really no contest, the second one is definitely tacky, the first is much more interesting); Today vs 1979 (here we are on another planet, where Today blows 1979 out of the water - the attachment to 1979 from many was because of their birth year, let's see who admits it?); Disarm vs Tonight Tonight (tough battle here, but I believe Disarm is better, although they are almost tied); Zero vs Rocket (again, it depends on taste, neither Rocket nor Zero are among my favorites from their respective albums). Well, I know nobody gives a damn, but shooting the breeze is almost sacred to me...

Well, if you're including Black Sabbath and Blue Cheer, we might as well throw in Bo Diddley or better yet, Robert Johnson! The realm I was talking about emerged around 20 years ago considering that stuff that was later called stoner, a bit of doom (here we're obviously going back to the '80s) and heavy psychedelia. Then if you consider psychedelia tout court, it has existed, you could say, since forever; obviously, it didn't start 18/20 years ago. Of course, there were people in the '80s who played this stuff, but let's say the formal framework of the subgenre began in the '90s. Unfortunately, I also have to contradict you regarding Sleep: one of the attendees, namely me, thinks that Dopesmoker is a pretty lousy album, not to mention Holy Mountain. First, it's boring like few; second, even in altered states, there are definitely better and much more trippy things. To be fair, the idea was remarkable, but the realization was much less so. Oh, and maybe it's just that I don’t really get all this greatness of Sleep.

chupa, I’d say we should keep it a bit low-key, I mean are you telling me you have 1500 stoner/doom/psych albums? I won’t ask you the question because I think you might have written something exaggerated, but simply because I’d like to know if there are REALLY that many albums in a scene that originated at most 18 years ago (excluding the founding fathers of the 80s for doom). And regardless of how many albums you have, objectivity cannot and should not exist when it comes to music. Objectivity understood as a singularity of judgment, obviously.

Another nice turnaround regarding my review assessment. Over time, this "easy" approach of his is having its effect. Yes, it certainly makes an impression but it's not trivial; on the contrary, it's filled with small sonic nooks to discover, and some melodies are fantastic. I'm adjusting the rating.

I realized that unfortunately, Om bores me. I've tried in every way, but they can't elevate my attention span. And as far as I remember, I also liked Conference of The Birds more. It seems they even did a split with Chasny aka Six Organs Of Admittance.
