... finally I can reply to you calmly, Mr. Nobody... let’s take it step by step (and sorry for the delayed response!).
I imagine the question you accuse me of dodging is:
"[...] how the hell do you appreciate music like that of Banco, Area, Museo Rosenbach, to stay in Italy, and listen to this stuff? This is not a rhetorical question; I really don’t understand how it’s possible. And I see you're also a devotee of death metal.... [...]"
The argument doesn’t hold up, in my opinion: why do you consider it heresy?! A blasphemy?! It seems so, given that you talk about "devotion": let’s not kid ourselves! We’re talking about music here, not anything else. And this album (let me repeat) is far from being a milestone of the genre.
Dear Mr. Nobody, why don’t you forget for a moment about "musical genre" and focus on what an artist "says"? You’re saying it’s impossible (or crazy, or ridiculous) to appreciate both Area and (I don’t know) Napalm Death: so does that mean if I adore a painting by Picasso, I can’t equally appreciate one by Munch? If I love Stephen King, does that mean Pirandello is crap? If I love sounds reminiscent of Miles Davis, can I never appreciate the "chaos" that Hendrix created?
I believe that if there is "beauty" in a band (from various points of view) whether it’s Meshuggah, or Atheist, Metallica, Behemoth, The Who, Nirvana, Museo Rosenbach... why not feel "free" to appreciate it? These are different things, even at opposite ends, perhaps from your perspective they are merely incompatible... but why restrict oneself to specific genres?
Listening to metal has led me (unlike others) to broaden my musical horizons, discovering that there was a way to do it (Strapping Young Lad, for instance) that owed a lot to psychedelia, 70s rock, progressive, electronic... in short, to (almost) all the rest of the music worthy of that name.
I don’t believe there are "dogmatic" justifications to the question you pose: I simply try to explore. To forget the "genre": is that asking too much? Generally, I can’t stand clichés, melody for its own sake: I find these things both in metal and in progressive (and also in other "genres"...). And now, please don’t tell me that I dodged the question... goodbye!
