It is said that a very young Eddie Vedder was watching "Saturday Night Live" from the comfort of his home and nearly fell off the couch when he saw Neil Young, whom he believed to be an "old washed-up hippie," accompanied by a band hired for the occasion, delivering a live version that was INSANE!!! of "Rockin' in the Free World." Elvis t-shirt, torn and patched jeans, an angry scowling face, and Old Black screaming. Perhaps grunge was born from that too.
