Joel & Ethan Coen Barton Fink - E' Successo a Hollywood

Certainly not among my absolute favorite siblings, but I acknowledge that there is something (upon closer inspection, quite a bit) good about it. The Lynchian atmosphere of the hotel, various interpretations, the fire sequence. Anyway, a nice film. 4 for excess.

I wonder if Brad Pitt has ever watched this movie. To me, it's like that high school photo where you're dressed like one of the characters from "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" and styled like a Japanese cartoon. It's one of those things that you know exists, you hope nobody ever sees it, and every now and then you get terrified that someone might post it on Facebook. There are sequences where the mix of "dashing but tormented + flowing messy long hair + tear-filled cerulean eyes" would make even a senator from PDL blush...

The review is excellent, although I don't share the judgment on the band. Back in the day, I approached them because they were a constant presence in the acknowledgments of albums by the more well-known bands of the German scene, and because Kursh spoke highly of them in a historic interview with Metal Shock. I got hold of a few of their albums (certainly this one - probably their best - and Hell for Sale, plus another one that I just can't remember). Personally, I've always found them rather bland and lacking a distinct identity. The "historic" names of the power scene, those that later inspired the frenzy of the second half of the '90s, could count, to varying degrees, on a recognizable sound and iconography: the BGs were the fantasy/epic ones, the RW the pirate-themed ones, and Helloween the jokey ones with the pumpkins. Gamma Ray and Rage could rely on the charisma of Hansen and Peavy and on an extremely effective songwriting. Essentially, the HG lacked any of these characteristics. They made respectable albums, well-played, but "harmless," alarmingly lacking in bite.

A curious proposal, more than interesting, I would say almost destined for completists of the "genre." Adequate review: too bad about a couple of blunders (the first sentence is terrible...). Good job anyway for the suggestion.

"formally impeccable"?!?!?! FORMALLY IMPECCABLE?!?!??! Christ, any episode of the Teletubbies is shot and photographed better! The problem isn't even that... The problem is that the delicious downward spiral that had begun already with the second chapter is interrupted. Here we went from a normal idiot film for little girls, to the apotheosis of crap (that is, Part I of the final chapter), passing through some of the most hilariously unintentional comedic scenes I have ever seen in a movie. The director and screenwriters should have had the courage to see this process through to the end, gifting us with an invaluable gem of a trash blockbuster that would make us double over with laughter, and instead, they handed us "only" a piece of shit movie. And that is truly unforgivable, because the available material could have produced a brontosaurus-sized pile of crap that would feed billions of generations of flies!!! Moreover, back to the "formally impeccable" discussion, it had been at least a decade since I had seen such poor CG in a megaproduct of this level. Aside from the wolves (which have progressively gotten worse throughout the series), what is truly frightening is the girl's face: it basically looks like it was pasted on each frame with Paint.

I'm back on these pages after years (good times...), to say two things: 1) the review is copy-paste in several points to the one you can find here: FilmUP - Recensione: The Hole 2) this movie is quite a piece of shit. I watched it again this week: the idea itself, as improbable as it is, could have had some interesting elements, but the final execution definitely leaves much to be desired.

I put it on the other night. Everything was perfect: I was tired, but not so much that I fell asleep after the first half hour. Heating set to 21, but I had a blanket over my stomach. Menabrea 66 cc. Nachos and spicy sauce brand "Guerrillja Anàl". I watched the first hour and it drew me in. Then the DVD skipped and I started cursing God and the Madonna like there was no tomorrow. All of this to say that my judgment is biased, but it really seemed well done to me. I'm not a huge fan of the franchise, but (in fact, probably because of this...) I really like Craig. I don't know... it's as if I'm rooting for him. I would see Connery and I was sure they could nail him inside a barrel full of shit, but he would still come out with his impeccable tuxedo and fresh breath, and would find someone to sleep with before he could even take a shower. When I watch Craig, I always think that if he manages to save himself this time too, at the very least he’ll discover he has a rare disease that will make his balls shrivel up like raisins, fall off, and grow back dangling from his nose. When he comes back from the first mission, sad and drunk, he reminds me of many Sunday mornings from years ago after heavy nights of which I only have vague memories and a nasty urinary tract infection. Craig is one of us!!

I'm really sorry for the lack of comments. Because it's an interesting page and well-written. I've seen Alessio Boni in some of his television performances, and I must say that he left me quite puzzled... You did well anyway.

I'm following you "from afar": I don't always manage to read and comment on your reviews, but you always suggest stuff that - personally - I've almost never heard mentioned anywhere else. The rating goes to that. Even if metalcore is The Evil.

Well done you, for continuing to speak respectfully about certain groups on these pages. As for them, I wouldn’t know: I lost track of them too many albums ago to judge. Of course, they deserve credit for having persevered for decades despite a public and sales response that is far from overwhelming. Sooner or later (maybe) I’ll want to satisfy my curiosity about how all those bands I listened to as a teenager sound today… :)
