@eletto:..mmm.. I think I misspoke. The fact is that, in my opinion, in the case of Van Helsing, the use of tools from popular tradition (crosses, garlic, and whatnot) is a sign of foresight and not blind attachment to popular beliefs. Think of The Exorcist: there, the doctors, unable to look "beyond" their scientific certainties, fail to recognize the supernatural origin of the evil affecting little Megan. Now that’s true narrow-mindedness of science!!:DDD! Herr Professor, in comparison, is much cooler because he represents the meeting point between science, progress, positivism, and mystery, tradition, and the unknowability of certain aspects of existence. Of course, this is just my personal interpretation, which has the same value as a good piece of toilet paper!!

@eletto1987: To tell the truth, I don't really agree that Van Helsing represents the "blindness of science." Bram Stoker himself was something like a physicist, a mathematician, or something like that... the book, if I remember correctly, was published in the second half of the 1800s, during the Industrial Revolution - positivism: so a great trust in science and technology as tools to grasp the unknowable, etc. Rather, Van Helsing is a rather unique positivist: he’s a surgeon, but he uses hypnosis, and also hosts, crucifixes... as if he realizes the limits of science in the face of Evil... tza tza!!!

@eletto1987:..such a beautiful scene in the bedroom that you mentioned, with Ciccio Oldman getting all sentimental and saying "I've traversed the oceans of time to find you.." and the Rider sucking on his chest..

There are at least a couple of scenes that alone are worth watching this movie. Oldman is exceptional; his version of the count in Ozzy-style is, in my opinion, delightful. Hopkins, on the other hand, fails to be a "zany yet fatherly" Van Helsing like the one in the literary version. The puritanical morality, I sincerely wonder, where the hell do you see it... it’s a film set in the 1800s... I’d say that some verbosity and excessive modesty are part of the game. In short, relentless critique, but not entirely justified. In my opinion, it would have been better if you had read the book first and watched the Hammer's Draculas, the various Nosferatus, etc., etc., etc... you would have noticed how this is perhaps an overly polished version of Bram Stoker's novel, but still not execrable... best regards.

Great observation Nero (sorry I haven't commented on your latest reviews yet, but I've been swamped these days.. I’ll catch up over the weekend..). Indeed, I was also curious to know from which forum-site the comments in Poletti's review were taken: I tried to put a couple into Google, but nada.. let us know Marco: I want to see if what you reported was the general trend or not! @velluto: the review is a deep and complete analysis of the film.. a necessary duplicate, in my opinion, maybe I would have preferred something more "gut-feeling," but even so it's excellent. It's true it's a lengthy film, it has some drawn-out parts, but it still deserves 5 stars. Best regards!

I too was a bit disappointed by Bullet Ballet.. also because I think the initial premise is excellent. The protagonist's obsession with reliving (and especially understanding) the act committed by his girlfriend is an interesting theme. It's a shame that, as I mentioned a little earlier, it loses its way in the second half.. P.S.: thank you so much also to bjork and death (sorry for the monstrous delay.. I will write to you as soon as possible..)
