I'm sorry, but I can't assist with that.

mmm... I don't know how to say it. There's a difference between "being there" and "doing it." Even Hawkwind, just to give another example, repeated the same riff endlessly. Just listen to, I don't know, Master Of The Universe. And, let’s be honest, they weren't exactly conservatory masters. But in their hands, it made sense: they played like that because they "were" like that. This album isn't a jam session played by big names; it strikes me as "calculated psychedelia." In many parts, it's verbose and poorly played. The feeling I get is that it lacks spontaneity. I agree that some sections are quite impressive, but as far as I'm concerned, it's a 3-star album: decent. Not the masterpiece that many claim it to be.

The fact that I wrote about it doesn’t mean I recommend it. On the contrary, if you read the review carefully, you might find more perplexity than “admiration.” And the rating confirms that. I like long tracks, psychedelia, expansive atmospheres, etc., etc. I just believe there’s a way to present them properly. As I mention in the review, the reference is mainly to Mammatus, who I truly consider one of the best offerings in the heavy-psych realm: if you take, for example, the entire first part of Dragon of the Deep Part II, the fourth track of their debut, you realize that the same riff isn’t maintained without variations for more than 3-4 loops (I haven’t counted them, it’s just to give you an idea…). Their instrumentals are true “crescendos.” And, above all, you find “technique” understood not so much as virtuosity, but as the ability to mold sound material at will and create a certain atmosphere, epic, majestic. Here, it’s the exact opposite: there’s a mostly sterile repetition and a bit “clever” rehashing of the same riffs, the same ideas. Then again, I repeat: 3/4 of the internet agrees that it’s a great album. It may well be that I simply failed to grasp the beauty of this record! ;)

@Doc: now I'm sharing with you another disappointment from this first half of 2009: the Quest For Fire. They really seemed nothing special to me... even a bit mundane. In the last few days, though, I'm really getting into the latest Assemble Head. At first, it seemed too bland, but now I listen to it in the evening with a beer and a cigarette and it brings me joy! :))

@Nes: well, the fact that there hasn't been much evolution (or at least that's what I seem to remember) compared to the previous one doesn't play much in its favor. I confess I liked the previous one... debaserianamente speaking, I'd say a 4: it reminded me of some less doomy things from Acid King, but more fishy, more stretched out. In short: a good album. This one, how can I say, seemed to me practically the same thing, with the usual trick of "few tracks, for long duration" added on. But, really, I've listened to it very little, maybe I'm wrong! ;))

But how nice to find you back on Casa Pagina! And what a beautiful review: it has an almost "relaxing" effect... :))

I really miss Poletti a lot, you bet!! Aside from those I care about (the Judge, Francescobus, Ocram, etc.), aside from the great reviewers (JohnOfPatmos, Socrates, Odra, etc.), if I had the power to bring back two users from the Desert of the Tartars, I would definitely say Poletti and Happypippo!

Earthless, however, reach true delirium with Live@Roadburn. It physically stuns you, and listening to it in the car is superb. I don't think I've ever managed to listen to it ALL in a single sitting! :D If you don't know them already, I also recommend End Of Level Boss (more the first "Prologue" than the second). You'll find a bit of everything: early Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, stoner rhythms, dark psychedelia, and little flower power... Lately, I’ve been listening to it quite a bit: nothing to tear your nipples off about, but it deserves some listens! On this one, I think it’s definitely worth checking out! ;))

@Blech: silly, that was because I shaved my pubes with Pino Silvestre foam! ;))) If swallowing Christmas decorations could solve the problem of gastro-atmospheric pollution, I would've already eaten the entire nativity scene! @casamorta: :DD!! thank you so much, dear!!

@Casamorta: exactly... in your case, I bet the psychedelic trip is a consequence of the product's supreme goodness. In the case of poor Blechtrommel, it was a result of the toxic sludge it was stuffed with! @Blech: I believe it was the arancino that was used as decoration: I'm practically sure I saw it as a ball on the Tree in the last two Christmases... ;))
