Listening to Steve Vai during his time with Zappa, one immediately realizes the great potential of the artist, despite a certain immaturity. Vai has improved exponentially over time. On the other hand, if you listen to the early Malmsteen and perhaps that of Odyssey, the difference is really minimal. While it's true that the Swede never delved deeper into his style, it is equally true that at 18 he was doing unheard-of things.
