Those cinephiles know how to play with words but often stray too far from the mark just for the sake of being snobbish. Speaking of Malick and The Thin Red Line, they say: "Seven Oscar nominations for this melodrama passed off as a war film. Slow as few and boring as many, it is capable of creating an incredible physical weariness in the viewer, rarely experienced during a cinematic screening." But how can they expect to be taken seriously? This is a "Malickian" film (can we say that?) through and through, and for that very reason, it is a great film, as it pays tribute to the director and the bandit James.
