Elliott Smith From A Basement On The Hill

NO, NO, we’re not there. We should start from the assumption of what the phrase "no one cared about him" means. Are we talking in terms of copies sold? In terms of influence on new songwriters? In terms of television appearances? When Smith was alive, he sold as much, if not more, than Will Oldham, Lou Barlow, Jason Molina, Bill Callahan, and I don’t believe that no one cares about Will. Either/or was included as album of the year by almost all English critics; that doesn’t seem like a negligible piece of information. The fact that Will Oldham doesn’t sell much (we’re talking about an average of around 50,000 copies for "Bonnie Prince Billy") doesn’t mean he wasn't cared about (and consequently Smith). As for television appearances or front pages of specialized magazines, I couldn’t care less. Sylvian, it’s not true that no one knew of his existence. Many did. Those who loved the type of music he proposed (including myself, as I adored Either/or). Then, the fact that death brings consensus is something we can't do anything about. I hug you and say goodbye, because when I think of Elliott, I become sensitive. Bye.
