Yesterday evening on BBC, there was Chaos and Creation at Abbey Road scheduled, featuring none other than Grandpa Macca live from the eponymous studio. In great form: to give an idea of what he accomplished, just think of a Band on The Run played with tape loops that he recorded on the spot (clinking crystal glasses in the background), accompanying himself on the harmonium (also in loop), with the help of Nigel Godrich. He played a few Beatles songs (I've got a feeling, Blackbird, Lady Madonna), improvised a couple of pieces on the mellotron (including Strawberry Fields) in addition to three songs from his latest album. One must admit that despite some showman tricks – especially in the parts with the mellotron and the tape loops – for an old man, he really played well and the evening was enjoyable.

Great review Joe, you made me want to grab it. We could discuss why the RHCP are making increasingly ridiculous albums compared to Frusciante's solo work (not to mention the collaborations with Mars Volta and Vincent Gallo) - maybe not great albums, but always full of interesting ideas.
