If we reason based on the fact that in Better Living there’s some psychedelia, then almost all the tracks with looped guitars and a couple of effects are psychedelia. But if Better Living is psychedelia, then what do Bardo Pond do, just to name one... Superspych? Hyperpsych? Psych to the nth power? Maybe it's better to say that Bardo Pond make psychedelia, and Qotsa certainly do not. In the end, they’ve always made little songs. Beautiful at first, that really grabbed you, now they're ugly. But they were and still are little songs.

The bassist was kicked out by the Melvins, which was among the reasons for the cancellation of the last tour, and Denison or Patton, perhaps to avoid fighting with Buzzo, was subsequently also thrown out of Tomahawk. The new album, and it pains me to say this because I love Tomahawk, is useless. It's a great remix of Native American music, but many are asking, who the hell cares that Duane Denison, Mike Patton & John Stainer decided to remix Native American music? It's like sending Totti to the rowing national team, it's like playing volleyball with a basketball. This will be the second Patton album I don't buy, after that other piece of crap, She, with Merzbow. After the immense masterpiece that is Mit Gas, they couldn't have a worse fall from grace.

The album came out in '95 - mid-summer to be precise - not in '94, and it's called "Return To The 36 Chambers... The Dirty Version," not Brooklin Zoo. And it starts with -- There Is Only 35 chambers... there is no... 36. I Know that... but... I want to create a NEW chamber, Oh, (unintelligible sound and the piano of Shimmy Shimmy Ya kicks in) -- Even Zion is aging and losing its touch, ai ai ai Mike Buongiorno style :). Anyway, beyond that, this album sucks, the penultimate one sucked, Wu has been sucking for eight or nine years now, and it’s a shame. I followed them since they were said to be the Next Big Thing, during the solo phase - all in one year - one better than the other, and it was said they would break up, when instead they came back with a killer double album, then Iron Man, then The Pillage... and then the crap. Every now and then I try to get something new, but I always end up deleting or giving everything back within a week. What a shame. But all it takes is to listen to "Goin Down" with the burp voice intro and life smiles at me. And I like to thank all the DJs across the country for bringing my shit... and I also like to thank all you underground mothafuckas... for keepin' it real. Between Only Built 4 Cuban Linx, Return To The 36 Chambers & King For A Day Fool For A Lifetime in the summer of '95, I hardly listened to anything else. Then summer ended and the week of my birthday, Disco Volante came out. What a fucking year. Anyway, Wu Tang sucks now. Yes.

The cover, though horrific, perfectly explains what you find in the album. The Viking ship flying the southern flag is brilliant. Horrible, but brilliant.

But as a first album? At the very least, it’s the second; there’s “untitled” from last year as an LP, just as beautiful. And then there are all the previous EPs with one track (at least half an hour long), The Titan Trick (incredibly rare and never heard by me), Terry Riley Is Playing At My House, Pilzmarmalade. If you want them, you know where to find me. // Anyway, I’m going out on a limb as always, and I give it a solid five, no doubt about it.

I missed the Fu-Manchu. The Fu Manchu. I missed the Stoned Hand Of Doom. I missed ON TRIAL IN CAGLIARI. I mean, ON TRIAL. I missed the Gorillas in Sassari (not that the Gorillas are anything special, though). It’s not that I’m a huge fan of concerts, and the Qotsa live don’t really inspire me that much. I would much rather go see Brant Bjork in the hills of Guspini. Bjork is still slim, and has long hair. Homme is chubby and has short hair... it excites me less.
