Rip Rig & Panic God
Voto:
I wanted to say that yesterday afternoon, while the sun lightened into a sorrowful sunset, I entered the main hall of the University of Rome. Playing was Misha Maisky with his little girl (Lily) at the piano. Another coincidence. As the two played, I wondered what they might talk about (dissonances?) over lunch in their home in Brussels. The concert was worth the expense... the only concern: it's a shame that at such a concert, especially in a university context, there were only "old babbions" and not also curious and lively female students drawn to the deep sounds...

Hello Odra, it's nice to see that you've "emerged" again. Constantly. Robustly. With many new pages. All to read. In the meantime, today, thanks to you, I've listened to God again and it gave me great pleasure. I will go read John's review on the requiem. I hope to soon share my thoughts on some new releases that have accompanied me in recent months...

In the shimmer of pixels, I had a kind of jolt when I saw rip rig and panic among the reviewed CDs. I confess I had no doubt about who could have pulled them out from the depths of time. thanx odradek.
Gil Scott-Heron Reflections
Voto:
Gil Scott-Heron is among my favorites. Among all his songs, I have a particular fondness for Winter in America, for that flute, for those keyboards... In his fierce critiques of society, he always managed to include an escape route; there was always a kind of light that offered a glimmer of hope. As far as I know, it seems he has been struggling with some illness for a while (by the way, a few years ago he canceled a tour in Italy; I had even bought a ticket!). For those who aren’t lucky enough to have his records at home, now is the time to stock up: music stores are full of reissues of his classic recordings at affordable prices. Kudos to Socrates, sharp picker of lost pearls.
Steely Dan Katy Lied

I also think that 11 Tracks Of Whack by Becker is a fantastic album, maybe even better (is this heresy?) than the last two by Fagen (excluding, of course, The Nightfly)...

Hi Socrates, I'm trying to get to the "making of Aja" (which I'm already looking forward to). Thanks for the tip. In the meantime, I want to point out that at Donald Fagen you can already listen to a song from the new "Morph the Cat" by the witty Donald.

Here they are, Steely Dan. An incredible duo with a whole constellation of musicians surrounding them (and Socrates only named a few...) Back in the day, I would have paid a few lire to enjoy a half-day in the studio and see a bit of the show those guys could pull off within those soundproof walls... Of course, Socrates hits the nail on the head, as usual and even more so. Fagen/Becker/Katz were a magical trio. I await Fagen's new CD as if it were from a dear friend. I already know what he will bring out, maybe it won’t surprise me, but it will certainly be hard to criticize. However, if there’s one thing, just one thing, that I can reproach Steely Dan for, it's a certain cold and controlled precision. For me, Doctor Wu is in the top 5 of SD.
Imogen Heap Speak For Yourself
Voto:
finally someone has thought about imogen heap! I really like her records. even in this one, I would say she really goes all out. she seems to know exactly what she's doing, considering she does almost everything on her own, from production to vocalizations. moreover, she is definitely the kind of girl I would love to hit on at a party...
Bill Evans Waltz For Debby
Voto:
The album is a true marvel. The trio Evans-La Faro-Motian gives chills... maybe I'm remembering wrong, but in some biography, I think I read that Evans (whom I adore) was somewhat overwhelmed by the striking and absolute skill of Scott La Faro... of course, albums like this should always be kept within reach...
Sufjan Stevens Come on Feel the Illinoise
Voto:
I confess I don’t know much about Sufjan. But this is a beautiful album (and a great review). It has been named album of the year (last year) in almost every part of the world, but I think I’ll keep listening to it (without overdoing it though) even in this new one...
