Rickie Lee Jones Pirates

the review and the record are on equal footing (even without lauranyro)...
in the end I made my decision... :o)

Socrates, the review works, you're always in great shape, nice intro about the covers (even though I would have preferred a bolder opening). Anyway, a step away from a 5. For perfection, it needed a reference (I'll throw this name out) to Laura Nyro.
Al Di Meola Di Meola Plays Piazzolla
Voto:
DiMeola is technically brilliant. It's said that as a kid he would spend time locked in a cupboard just to practice endless scales without bothering anyone at home. However, it seems to me that his melodic solutions aren’t always 'expressive' (in my opinion, it’s a bit of a problem with all these guitarists). Here, though, he does quite well. I prefer DiMeola to Paco De Lucia, especially in the albums with the restless tango singer Camaron de la Isla.

Rickie Lee Jones! But Socrates, are you crazy?! I've downloaded three of her CDs (Pop Pop, Naked Songs, and The Evening of My Best Day) from eMule these days, and I can't stop listening to her... I had lost track of her some time ago, too long ago (unfortunately, we always get distracted sooner or later, even with the ones we cherish most, even for just a moment)... in her, I find precious nourishment, golden flecks of strength and vulnerability.
Marvin Gaye What's Going On
Voto:
Marvin is a great. He may not have the visionary imagination of Stevie Wonder, he may have tried for too long to become a languid crooner like Nat King Cole, but when he insists with those fantastic major 7 chords, he has no equal...
(too bad about that crazy father of his, he took him away just when Marvin was making a big comeback)

I would say they aim too much for the 'coldplay' target, with the added drawback that they hit it very few times. The album is one of those that you put on when you have things to do and don’t want to be distracted by special chords or surprise 'bridges'. One of those CDs that doesn’t annoy you. You do your things, and it goes on. Then in the end, when you come back to hear the neighbor hammering against the wall (another picture?!?!), you realize that the CD has ended and you don’t even know how many tracks you've listened to. They may be athletic, but they lack breath. Worth a second listen.

I even look for it and actually buy it. I had heard that Paddy had risked losing his sight. A truly awful thing... (I know something about it; something similar happened in my family). Socrates, there's something in Paddy's 'adult' face (in the few photos I've seen) that speaks of a lot of suffering. Paddy shows his lost youth with an almost disarming sincerity. When I buy "I Trawl..." I'll give you a shout... in the meantime, I want to let you know that these days I'm listening to Rickie Lee Jones in massive doses...

I was tempted to get Trawl The Megahertz (is that what you’re referring to?) but then life had other plans for me... I had read that it was an interesting album for its original structure and somewhat distant from the song formula. Paddy doesn’t hold back... I’ll have to find a way to get it... Have you listened to it?

I also really liked Aztec Camera and Lloyd Cole (you're right kosmogabri when it comes to PJ Harvey and Costello - I saw him on tour this year with his silver boots, dark glasses, and a thousand guitars around his neck!! What a guy!). Dear Socrates, I even bought "Gunman and Other Stories" by Paddy McAloon and "Cruel" by Swoon stuns me every time I listen to it (I won't talk about Steve McQueen's tracks out of modesty), I like almost everything by Bob Hewerdine (from the Bible to his solo albums)... in short, everything is spot on, the only ones that never really "got to me" are Deacon Blue... I would tell sylvian1982 that I disagree when he says certain things are better kept among a few... if only someone on the radio played good songs, we'd be even more of us...
