Immense masterpiece, one of the few Oscars truly deserved (he won all five!). Do you know why Nicholson wore the cap? To protect his scalp, because he had just had a hair transplant! He was the "fourth" choice: there were candidates for the role before him, Brando, James Caan, and Gene Hackman, all of whom declined. Thankfully, I say.
