One could say more, because this work (it is unclear which version) was contested in a court and rejected by its patrons. Leonardo was not only brilliant in his exceptional and multifaceted mastery, but he was also regarded as a rebel, "a difficult one," and therein lies his charm. Commissioning a work from Leonardo was always a risk; the "results" were not guaranteed (don't get me wrong, I don't mean in an artistic sense). They tried to tame him, but he never yielded. A charisma that arises from the strength of ideas deemed heretical because (in the case of sacred works) the Master had his own concept of Christian spirituality, which clashed with the iconographic thinking of the Vatican at the time. It's a shame not to talk about it.
