It deserves credit for being the only Western film that talks about the Rwandan genocide, but it has a slight Disney sheen that irritated me—I don’t know if you understand. The African Schindler's List, yes, but even lampposts know the context of Schindler's List, while not much about Hotel Rwanda. A film that hints at things, therefore, but unfortunately leaves us ignorant about the context. I could also say it provides an opportunity to delve deeper into the context (see review). In my opinion, the director peaked with In the Name of the Father; it is emblematic that he, an Irishman, tackled the theme of the internal Rwandan conflicts... I'll skip over colonialism for now or maybe another time, no time to spend here. Cheers!
