Someone else translated it as "full break," but we're still there; in any case, I linked breakbeat to big beat, just for a matter of names, because in my opinion, this is the logic that inspired those who coined the term big beat. I agree that stylistically, drum & bass is a close relative, as the rhythms are similar. I also mentioned that big beat is more straightforward. Speaking of the origins of breakbeat, I heard some very old recordings of James Brown where the two drummers created wonderful counter-rhythms, all strictly played. Forget about akai...

Yes, I think that "big beat" is the offspring of a great misunderstanding based on the phonetic similarity between "Beat" and "Battuta." In reality, Beat = Battito (which is a fraction of the beat) or we can at least call it "accent." Battuta, or better yet Measure, translates to "Measure" or "Bar" in English. Certainly, whoever coined the term "big beat" derived it from "break beat," similar to how the term trip-hop came from hip-hop. Breakbeat literally means counter-rhythm, and it was a very hype concept in the English electronic scene of the late '90s, so much so that the stuff of the Prodigy is often referred to as "breakbeat." This new rhythmic blend that came afterward, a close relative of house and that made use of straighter and less fragmented rhythms compared to breakbeat, with a strong accent on the first beat of the measure, on the ONE to be clear, was consequently baptized: Big Beat.

For Mauri: Big Beat=Battuta Grassa. This is how Italian journalists freely translated the English definition of this musical genre.
