"The struggle for the possession of minds in America will have to be fought in a video arena, with Videodrome. The television screen is now the true only eye of man. It follows that the television screen has become part of the physical structure of the human brain. Television is reality, and reality is less than television." David Cronenberg - Videodrome (1982)

Yes, the only regret is seeing very few comments in a review of the great Black Duke :-)

Among other things, he not only played the Fender Rhodes excellently, but also the vibraphone and Hammond organ. Besides being an immense composer and arranger, of course :-)

The only album I own is "Transmissions From The Satellite Heart," and I love it a lot. However, I've always found their earlier productions a bit hard to digest: maybe too... psychedelic. I believe this album fully belongs to this latter category, or am I mistaken? Great review, in any case ;-)

Happy "Dig Your Own Hole"?? Enea, you're disappointing me; that album is one of the absolute masterpieces of the magnificent '90s. I guess the Roman honeymoon is off :D

I would say that in "Smokers Delight" the Trip-Hop/Downtempo/Dub component is very strong, while in "Carboot Soul" it’s the (my favorite) Rap. And then, watch out for the covers, both are beautiful! ;-)

And then let's remember: "Who's the black private dick that's a sex machine to all the chicks?-Shaft!-Damn Right" :-))

I definitely prefer the Stax period. Albums like "Hot Buttered Soul," "Joy," "Black Moses," and the soundtracks of "Shaft" and "Truck Turner" are in my opinion unmatched by anything that Black Moses has produced afterward, both in terms of quality (they are truly masterpieces) and mood and atmosphere (the magnificent '70s and the Blaxploitation era). In any case, great review Paolo, as always ;-)

I would give them 10/5, but clearly mine is a biased opinion. I adore them, ever since I was blown away at 12 by the videos for "Elektrobank" and "Block Rockin Beats" up until the day I was lucky enough to see them live a year ago. Kudos for the choice, by the way, it's one of my absolute favorite tracks of theirs :-)
