Katatonia Night Is The New Day

Well done, Hell, but I want to highlight something... and I say this without fear (after all, we all think it): Mikael Akerfeldt is a big idiot!! ...the kind that is really pompous and baroque, just like the music of the latest Opeth. Unfortunately, it's true about the Katatonia album, half a disappointment... sob...

Ah Ah, if you’re convinced that the album came out in '94 or '95, then it must be true! This CD passed through my hands many years ago, when I was still a guitar wanker and, as a young lad, I was obsessed with Drim Fiat(a)r and ultra-technical, fast stuff. How could I understand Psychosis??? Poor me, I wonder what happened to it or to whom I gave it, what a fool...

Well... I think... should I really say it? In my opinion, it's not Katatonia that has been "influenced" by Opeth or Tool, but VICE VERSA. There, I said it! Mikael Akerfeldt is a great musician, no doubt about it, but I've never found that much originality in Opeth. Of course, the first three albums (up to "My Arms Your Hearse") remain fantastic and very inspired for me, but originality is something else. Same goes for Tool; "Aenima," for example, is beautiful, but they're overrated too. And I don't understand why. It's fashionable to say a band "sounds like Opeth" rather than "like Tool," BULLSHIT! Let's get back to Katatonia; I haven't listened to this album yet, but I know what my criterion for judgment will be, namely, a Katatonia album can only be compared to other Katatonia albums. The same goes for Paradise Lost, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Amorphis, you name it... real heavyweights, people who have genuinely allowed themselves the luxury to experiment and change throughout their career. These bands have had courage. Opeth and Tool, for me, no, they remain clever craftsmen.

damn... am I the last romantic in the universe still waiting to hold the ORIGINAL CD in my hands? Anyway... as soon as I have it, I’ll come back to let you know what I think; for now, I don’t know... my instinct tells me to trust Gasta and Hell. Goodnight...
