I, on the other hand, always appreciate them; imho, one gets a good idea if they don't know the reviewed artist! That said, I believe the best review style is the one reminiscent of Scaruffi... technical, biographical, descriptive, zero emotions, zero theatricality... :D [I don't know them anyway].

I didn't know they had done other collections like that (I only know them by name, never heard anything) so your point can make sense, but "the umpteenth rehash," as you remind me, is due, indeed, to commercial reasons. It's clear not only from the sound but especially from the video, which is not very different from the commercial pop standard, people who rely on a certain effective image (e.g., Madonna who, coincidentally, "reinvents" herself with every album [only missing is for her to become a metalhead]). They want to sell, they want to capture new targets, maybe waiting for a new exclusively "metal" album that might sell fewer copies but will make them seem like the champions of the case. Where’s the problem? This is what I don’t understand. One shouldn't still believe in the fairy tale of "purity," of not selling out to the market. Sooner or later, everyone does, or almost everyone (obviously I'm talking about well-known bands like Helloween or Metallica who enter the gaming circuits like Guitar Hero, not those who make more niche stuff by choice/genre followers, or superstars who can afford to go their own way). They have to sell something, and nowadays if you're not the hot chick in heavy rotation on MTV, or the bling-bling rapper, or the pretty band for teenage girls, you don’t sell a thing. Aside from the fans or those who want the original collection, that 13-year-old post-illuminating listen to "Master of Puppets"-"Reign in Blood" who looks up metal band names on Wiki wants to get into Helloween and downloads the albums from Rapidshare, Emule, etc.. then maybe he even writes an enthusiastic review about it on Debaser ["I am stunned" (cit.)]. Don't like it? Don't buy it, listen to the old albums and avoid ridiculing yourselves by pretending to be the true ones of the situation (obviously I'm referring to Tonycool). Are they selling out? You, outraged with 400 one-star reviews all over the web, are only advertising them, giving them visibility and the copies they're looking for. :D

If a random metal band changes sound, here comes the classic average metalhead shouting "sellouts! shame! we want metal back! what a disgrace, there's a saxophone, I want the guitar, whine whine!". How sad. Can't you accept a damn twist? And especially if, as you say, this album was made in a pretentious way just to celebrate the "best of", what's the problem? Would you rather spend money on 1 new song + 20 you already have on the other albums? Not to mention that, since the average metalhead is a 14-year-old who downloads albums from rapidshare, it's normal, given the music industry crisis, for them to think about appealing to other targets (maybe still playing metal live to keep old fans and income). I haven't heard the album but the idea is appreciable. I opened the link from ilfreddo and damn, the track sucks but it's clearly a weird little thing for fools; it looks like the video for "Dr. Greenthumb" by CH. You take everything too seriously. By the way, super pretentious.. a meticulously curated image.. a bit like those shitty Twilight-style things for 12-year-olds or the glam stuff for 40-year-olds. Just pandering. Besides the 14-year-olds, now the 12-year-olds will listen to them too.

By name, yes, but I've never heard anything. I'm browsing the discogs page (Martes has very high ratings!) with "maiz," it seems interesting, is it his best?
