question 40 (nice, it took me half an hour by car): I start the hourglasses together, when the 4-minute one finishes, I flip it. When the 7-minute one finishes (and I have 1 minute left in the other), I flip the 7-minute one and let the remaining minute drop in the other. 8 minutes have passed and I have the 7-minute one with 6 minutes "on top" and 1 minute "below": I flip it, the minute passes. = 9 minutes. And that's that.
