One of these days I'm gonna get organizized
Let me tell you about myself
Let's start by clarifying the origin of the name, created about three years ago, right in the middle of adolescence, in the midst of a period of satanic downloading (after all, ADSL had just arrived). In my eagerness to build a musical culture, I also ended up discovering the sound of Elio e le Storie Tese and, impressed by the song John Holmes (Una vita per il cinema), I thought it would be a great idea to draw inspiration from it for a nickname. Honestly, the effect lasted one week, maybe less, after which I realised that choosing a name is a matter to take seriously and, today, I don't like JohnHolmes anymore. But that's not important. Know that I am a character in constant growth… (and cue the double entendre!)
In life, I study foreign languages at university, after a disappointing five-year experience at scientific high school, although I don't despise those five years: they turned out to be very important.
Let's talk about music and, why not, about DeBasio!
The earliest musical memory I have dates back to when I was four years old and finds me desperately running away after seeing the cover of Dynasty. From that moment, an intense passion for rock music was born, mostly because of the records spinning at home: like all children, I went through an 883 phase but, unlike other kids, I could boast of already knowing Springsteen, Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and more. I remember my middle school years for the discovery of grunge and, more generally, the typically 90s/00s stuff. The real turning point, though, happened in high school, when a classmate introduced me to the world of heavy metal as well as the virtuoso guitarists: it was love at first note! Slowly, I became a metalhead and, after being weaned on classic metal (Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc.), I found my reason for living in death metal. After some time, I got really fed up with both metalheads and metal itself, so I went back to my rock roots—and that was a very pleasant return to origins.
I won't say that “I listen to practically everything” because that always sounds like an empty cliché, but I can say I listen to very different things, with balance and variety. I don't like youngsters who flaunt their supposed all-round knowledge of music, the result of endless downloads, mostly for their own sake: music is not meant to give yourself an image, if anything you should give character to music. On this occasion, I'll take the liberty of quoting Moonchild:
"Is your favourite album theirs? Make your heart their album"
John, you’re boring us to death with all this f***ing music, can you tell us about DeBasio?!
I discovered DeBaser while searching for a site that offered the chance to read reviews written by real people, whom I find more trustworthy than certain so-called critics. The best thing about the site (which is honestly the coolest ever!) is its freedom, with no limits: you find everything, really everything. The first reviews I wrote were mostly metal-themed: needless to say, I'm now quite embarrassed by them, and I think I started a new chapter with the one about the Firebird concert. In the past, I wrote duplicate reviews, now I'm against it (although maybe I could do it again, if I really disagreed with existing reviews, of course); I try to review records that aren't already on DeBasio, even if it's not always easy to find something new.
Alright John, now what would you like to say to those who stumbled across your profile?
First of all, thank you for stopping by and for having the patience to read these lines. Without any presumption, let me express an opinion: in recent years, while studying philosophy, I tried to look sophisticated by flaunting Nietzsche and Schopenhauer everywhere (famously two fun guys!). It was nothing but a huge waste of time and energy! My motto is “Take it easy!”: always give your best and enjoy life!
See you next time!
