And to think that I didn't like it at first! Now I love it.

I read it a while ago, but I thought I would judge it only after about twenty complete listens. One of the most beautiful episodes of Miles that I have heard so far. I just read that the woman on the cover is Cecily Tyson, who at the time was Miles's "unofficial" partner; putting her photo on the cover was a way to publicly acknowledge their union, how romantic! Contemplation at its finest.

Welcome to DeB first of all. A big debut, Lyle Mays is very familiar to me. I have the album and haven't had the time to listen to it yet; the review is more than good.

"The Red One" is the second track on "I Can See Your House From Here." It's a bit of a "gem" on the album, in my opinion, and I'd love to have the chance to play it in the future. There's also a slower rendition in "Day Trip," the latest solo album. It represents a nice challenge even for a drummer, in my view.
As for Pastorius, I certainly recognize his greatness. He revolutionized the way the electric bass is played, and you could say that current bassists are all his "children" (covers of "Teen Town" abound). However, I'm not so sure he's been as great in terms of composition. His solo albums haven't blown me away so far; perhaps my current musical knowledge doesn't allow me to appreciate him for what he truly is.
Moreover, I believe that when a genius artist dies young, a mechanism of veneration is set in motion that turns him into an untouchable, timeless icon in the eyes of the "fans" (note well). Listening to some, it seems that Pastorius was the only bassist of the last century. In short, before Jaco arrived, Weather Report had Vitous, who I believe is an immense talent, and it often seems that Pastorius is head and shoulders above Vitous; that doesn't seem fair to me.

Excuse me, may I interrupt if I can. I greet acqualife and antoniodeste. @acqualife. If you feel like it, listen to something from the '90s too. I recommend: 1) a good album, the one with John Scofield "I Can See Your House From Here", listen to "The Red One", it's a blast. 2) "Beyond The Missouri Sky", with Charlie Haden; this is a masterpiece of '90s music. All acoustic, a wonder; just listening to Pat Metheny's phrasing in "Waltz for Ruth", the first track, will leave you enchanted.
