Peter Gabriel Scratch My Back

@ GABRIELTRIPALDI: first of all, hi. PGI is a good album. Defined by Gabriel as "a collection of songs." PGII, although I know it is revered by many, despite the production and the presence of the immense Fripp, I actually agree with you regarding its inconsistency. There are nice tracks, others that are very good. I don't like the type of keyboards chosen during the recording. But it's a very personal judgment that will get me into a lot of trouble. The Family and.... is a complex, painful, and in its own way beautiful track. PGIV is a fantastic album. Unfortunately, my vinyl has a terrible sound quality (it’s not due to my setup). Very dark, with a "low" recording. I keep promising myself to buy the remastered CD version..... In the end, however, Gabriel has been (and perhaps still is) a musical genius. However, by nature, when he writes songs that are definitely below my expectations, I have no mercy. David Bowie, for example, whom I admire immensely, has written a ton of crap. Myth or no myth, if I need to send him packing, I don't think twice. Both Bowie and Gabriel, I'm afraid, have nothing left to say. It's been many years now. Bye, see you soon.

I've listened to the album twice, without much conviction. Therefore, I will refrain for now from giving it a certain rating. I still believe that Gabriel has been overly glorified here in Italy. I loved and still love "those" Genesis. To madness. As a solo artist, I consider PGIII - PGIV and Passion to be true masterpieces. SO was a pleasant diversion. I also saw him on the tour related to that album (I think in '87, at the arena in VR) and it was exhilarating!!! However, with Us and Up (I don't even consider OVO), he disappointed me a lot. But returning to the CD in question, an album of covers, honestly, I wasn’t expecting that. Bowie, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, etc., have done it, but it’s always a risk and the results are not always exciting. From Gabriel, I always expect something more. Am I perhaps overestimating him, especially in the last 15 years? From a musical genius like Gabriel, and considering he keeps us in suspense for years before giving us a new work, well, I hoped for better. I didn't miss a minimalist and "soporific" cover album. I miss the rhythms of San Jacinto, The Family and the Fishing Net, I Don't Remember, and so on.

But look who it is! A summer from many, many years ago. On the radio, we were bombarded with Donna Summer (Could...) Hurricane by Dylan (the 45 RPM version, of course) and Gianni Bella with a song that would later win the Festivalbar. Among these hits was Music by John Miles, of which I still own the vinyl purchased from my sister. I know his collaborations well—as you have extensively listed—especially Tales of Mystery and Imagination by Parsons, and I was aware that during the golden years of Tina Turner in the '80s, John played keyboards and sang duets with the pantheress. I wasn't even aware of this—yet another?—Miles album. Interesting. But I don't know if my curiosity will lead me to buy it. In the meantime, I'll look into it. Thank you.

I read that there are many of us who have been fooled. Aside from the seven and a half euros, the fact is that this movie is a crazy hoax!! I was really an idiot!!! The Orphanage - really nice - by comparison deserves 12 Oscars!!!

An epic disappointment!!!! I'm almost tempted to rewatch Forbidden Planet, an excellent sci-fi film from the '50s.

I only own 4 albums by PT. So I'm not sure if I’m entitled to boast about knowing this band very well. However, allow me to say that while for me this is an album that barely reaches sufficiency, giving it 5 stars seems truly exaggerated. As I have already mentioned, PT has the characteristic of producing albums that are marked by a lack of linearity. I don’t question the talent of Wilson and his band at all. Excellent professionals. Yet, at times – or often – they irritate me. The various comparisons to Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Genesis, etc., are excessive. My favorite remains the first album released (if I’m not mistaken and from what I’ve read in the booklet, it’s practically a nearly solo work by Wilson. A collection of tracks that, when pieced together the right way, almost make it a concept album). I appreciate "In Absentia" enough and find myself conflicted with "Deadwing." This Stupid Dream has never won me over. Maybe I'm exaggerating. So for a few years now, I've definitively left the planet Porcupine Tree. Bye.

Precisely because I respect him and I’ve been following him since 1973, I have absolutely no problem giving this album a solid 1. Unnecessary, anachronistic, and boring. This artist is truly wearing me out. Bah! Once upon a time…
Van der Graaf Generator Godbluff Live 1975

VDGG and King Crimson are my favorite bands in the progressive scene. Personally, nothing from Hammill's band gets tossed aside (not even The Quiet Zone... which has some beautiful ballads). Godbluff is a particularly "mean" album and masterfully played. It's too obvious to compare it with The Least.., P.H, and H to He. With Godbluff, the band forcefully shifts towards other sounds. I remember when this album came out (I was 14-15 years old), my older friends and big fans of Genesis and VDGG welcomed this album very positively (also Still Life, a bit less World Record). I recall the not-so-nice reviews regarding Hammill, accused of shouting too much. For me, it was and remains a fantastic album (rating 4.5) that I purchased on CD with the (useless) bonus tracks. The vinyl, alas, crackles a bit too much. I've worn it out.
