Stefano Cantini L'Amico Del Vento

Wow what a welcome! A heartfelt thank you to everyone, especially to those who don’t often stop by these pages. @Cap: yes, the italics in the text are by Cantini. Speaking of the barriers between jazz and classical music, I remember that in 1992 in Padua there was a bit of a controversy, since the great jazz guitarist Ralph Towner was supposed to perform at the auditorium of the Pollini Conservatory (a prestigious local institution). Well, at the last minute the conservatory did not allow the concert, arguing that "jazz, with its tribal rhythms, was not suitable for the acoustics of the hall." But can one actually support such nonsense? Now, aside from the fact that the concert was solely for acoustic guitar, aside from the fact that Ralph Towner's music is as subtle and intimate as one can imagine... Can you believe it? It was '92, not a hundred years ago! The concert was moved to the Oratorio delle Maddalene - a beautiful place with great acoustics, by the way. Thankfully, today this mentality is a thing of the past, and the Pollini auditorium hosts jazz concerts galore. @Hal: the album was released in 2006. You can find it on IBS for 12.50 euros (not bad), anyway before buying, I’ll reach out myself (tomorrow, hopefully) with a few “taster bites”…

Now that I’ve listened to the CD, I’d like to introduce a small element of perplexity—not so much to play the contrarian but to provide as much information as possible to those reading these pages. That said: the musicians are often sublime (you rightly mention the saxophonists, but there's also a fantastic Mulgrew Miller!), and the themes are often beautiful (the shadow of Coltrane envelops and spurs on, and that’s fine), and there are more than a few mind-blowing solos... However, I was not particularly convinced by the more distinctly "ethnic" part of the music and the vocal inserts. To me, "Realization" seems empty and even a bit irritating, with this sort of Tibetan singing that feels glued to the music with glue, and then the vocalizations in otherwise fantastic tracks like "Qing Wen," "Kiss The Skies," and "Gwoka"... By all means, they work during the theme exposition, but during improvisation they cover and distract, in my opinion... Was it really necessary? That said, I realize this is an extremely subjective matter of taste, and I can only agree with you in recommending the listening of this CD: if the elements I highlighted don’t bother you, you will discover a little gem.

Salutations and various thanks to the newcomers. Hal, I don't know why, but I can no longer find the CDs of the Manifesto around here... If "l'Amico Di Cordoba" is at the level of the song "novedade" present here, it must be a beautiful CD...
