To every action, is there an inversely proportional reaction?
So our two Robots have reached their Third Album (in seven years), a notoriously tricky task, especially if they're coming off two Major Records like the self-titled album and "Get RID!" where hints of Pop-infused Punk clashed harmoniously (?) with electronic earthquakes.
Action/Reaction: Let's be honest: Dee & Sue are completely unhinged (and proudly so, by the way...) and would probably create musical-anarchic clashes on their own that border on unlistenable...but...
Oh yes, there's a but, because here and in all their previous work, the magic is sparked by an alchemical intersection caused more by fission than by fusion: a perfect explosive charge between the irrational world of the two from Liverpool and their logical (techno) father, that Chris Corner, the brain and heartbeat behind the Sneaker Pimps and IAMX projects: so fascinating in his formal electronic style, so dark...so decadent.
Obviously: said like this, it doesn't sound reassuring, but don't worry, this is not a depressing record, quite the opposite: Corner just brings his skill in handling the electro synthesis during the production phase (and God, if you can hear it!) and maybe in tracing a safe path in the adorable fractured heads of the two sweeties, who write, play, and sing in their Style: unstable, but that's where the charm is, everything is chaotic (even if they don't reach the levels of sonic "disorder" of the first two) and a lot funnier, with choruses moving along the borders of obsessive Rock and Pop references (it's unclear how seriously they put between their influences the Madonna of "Desperately Seeking Susan").
Sharp songs, in perfect Punk Style and consequently irreverent lyrics with the result of an utterly enjoyable and quite cheeky little record that satisfies our craving for melodic binges.
They're in the Music Biz: fortunately, they do it their way: not very seriously (which is a merit), let's hope Corner keeps them crazy for a long time.
