Ornette Coleman Free Jazz: A Collective Improvvisation

The true masterpieces of Ornette are others: "Shape..." and "This is Our Music." There is no comparison; there they are truly free and play what they want, even (heresy! sold out!) very melodic and lyrical things, as well as harmonically bold and rhythmically advanced. Listen.

This album is a manifesto, and like any manifesto, it squanders beauty and true freedom in the name of extremist ideology... indeed, the musicians are not truly free, but they "have to" play free, because hey, that's the very name of the album, man! A review that's too adoring and not objective enough for my tastes... sorry!

Giudicone's comment is insane, absolutely hilarious. What nonsense, for heaven's sake, modern jazz invented by Brubeck AH AH AH AH AHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

I don't know the album, but from how you describe it, I don't think it would excite me... I recommend everyone to listen to "Convergence," instead.

Agreeing with sadoll, I remember beautiful and fresh melodic lines, even if not particularly original. It could be that I was in my first or second year of high school and at every party "children" was one of the most eagerly awaited slow songs; the fact remains that I have not negative memories.

Oh, the 4 is just to distinguish your reviews that I like so so so much from those that I like "only" so much. And then it's to avoid always giving you a 5 ;-)

I too, like Muff, remember him as an exceptional sideman... I miss this, even though the overdubbed guitars... I can already feel a gag rising!
