Simply put, Ryan O'Neal was superb in Barry Lyndon and Jack Nicholson was in The Shining... they would both have sucked in each other's roles! Anyway, Poletti, let's think this through; I basically agree with what you're saying. I'm not saying he's the worst actor around. When in my first post (19) I called him "mediocre as hell," with that mediocre I meant that he has done something decent, like the movies you mentioned. In your post 24, you replied that mine is a crappy post, which led me to deduce that you considered it "mediocrely excellent"! I especially like him in Arizona Dream; do you know it?

I was about to review it, assuming no one had done so, then I thought, "let me check!" and there it was, already a review, by the way the same version I have, by the way from Grasshopper...what bad luck! An absolute masterpiece.

CaptainHowdy, in post 35 I argued a bit, but not too much, to be honest. The fact is we are talking about tastes and subjective impressions, so there's little to argue about, on both sides. And it's much easier to argue opinions about things from the past, thanks to hindsight. Anyway, I reiterate that in my view, Johnny Depp is not a good actor; I've never found him credible in the roles he's played, always over or (more often) under the lines, painfully lost in his little gay dollish grimaces with a teardrop, or in his expressions of bewildered and dull surprise, ready to reveal a sluggish "mental" reflex, like a sleepy, clueless dullard. His gaze never conveys the impression of a sophisticated mind in action... too dazed, too quirky, distracted, "unfocused"... a real nerd. Since everyone will continue to think as they please, I'll stop spoiling your fun and wish you, as fine connoisseurs that you are, a good journey into the depths of the Depp universe, so rich in treasures and beauties to discover! Bon appétit... ;-)

Dear NICCHE GOSTE, maybe I'm just too demanding... you, on the other hand, seem quite easy-going to me, and the reference to your grandmother's recipes in a cart confirms it! ;-)

@Fusillo: it's not that I hate him, I just don’t understand on what grounds some people consider him a great actor! Who cares if he's less bad compared to other so-called actors of his generation, does that make him great? At most, honest, as you rightly put it. @S4doll: "Depp is a hell of an actor. Because he has charisma, style, talent, he's sinister and unique, and he makes his characters one of a kind." So it is, if you think so. Don't worry, I’ll gift you Johnny Depp! I’ll keep Gunnar Bjornstrand ;-) And I repeat that the idea that Depp is better than many of the "actors of his generation" is unfounded. It would be like saying that Tiziano Ferro isn’t that bad because he’s better than Luca Dirisio. I admit I haven't seen Finding Neverland; if I get the chance, I will, but even if it were a brilliant performance, I don’t think one isolated case would significantly lift the low "average" regard I have for him. Continuity matters too, and it's also important to refuse certain silly roles, like Pirates of the Caribbean!! @GiudiceWoodcock: the same applies to what I said above. @Poletti: of course, for you the important thing is to align with a "common" opinion; you generally lean on what critics say, this time on the fact that "Johnny Depp is very liked on DeBaser." Even if he were the hero of the site: who cares! What does it mean, since he’s liked (but is it really so? So far only two or three have defended him!) he’s untouchable? To me, he remains a rather insignificant actor. I only appreciated him decently in "Arizona Dream"; in the remaining instances, he has always disappointed me, partially or completely. You adore him? WHY?? Can you manage to stand on your own and walk with your own legs, reasoning with YOUR head, or do you need the support of some buddy, like in the days of scraps at neighborhood parish events?

Hey there, Mr. Alfred, thanks for the visit! Oh yes, Braxton is definitely one who truly deserves the label... pure sound experimentation, the quest for extreme timbre, extreme output not giving a damn about sales; and in the slow moments, a metaphysical dilation of time, unreal, like "Waiting For Godot." Thanks again!
