But aren't you Marco Conidi? I saw him in concert when I was a kid... no less than opening for Cocciante with three songs! And Aida Cooper was there too!!! Do you remember Aida Cooper? "C'è in giro in'altra razza/ fanculo"... or "prendi la tua vita/ fa l'amore con lei," rock lyrics for sure... and then you go to Sanremo to sing with Saruzzu di Bella "pensa se domani fosse un giorno eccezionale/ uno di quei giorni senza telegiornale/ e noi qui/ brava (or "tra la"?) gente. Pa - papa - papa - pappappapa - pa - pararapapappa"... Bleah :(

I’ve always promised myself to take a dive into the New Orleans of Dixieland, or at least since I found myself in the Sicilian town where Nick La Rocca was born. A spectacular page, practically filled with all the impressions that chase me every time I think of the Italian-American jazz men of the past.

Here among the reviews of Westerns, there's "Django," spaghetti western... the plots in westerns are more or less always the same, so much so that the great Sergio Leone suddenly froze the whole genre in time (in my opinion marking its end) with the famous "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly." It's a bit like saying "the knight, the dragon, the keyboard" in gothic, or "the fairytale, the pagan deity, the keyboard solo" in prog, or again "the big riff, the high note from the guy in leather pants, the guitar solo," and there you have hard rock served. Still want more? Yet between "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" and "Django," even if there may not be a huge difference in plot, THERE'S AN ENORMOUS DIFFERENCE IN SUBSTANCE. If an arena rock album is developed properly, it can become a masterpiece, just like a spaghetti western film, or a martial arts movie made in Hong Kong, or a French existential drama can be masterpieces or duds, BUT NEVER DUDS SIMPLY BECAUSE THEY BELONG TO THAT SPECIFIC GENRE. I hope I've made myself clear. And thank you for your patience.

Sorry, then what should we say about genres like gothic? It's always the same epic story, filled with overwhelming keyboards, knights and dragons, death and martyrdom, dark lands and desolate fields... nihilism and horror... and yet there’s something I like, you like, we like, because it’s approached with less superficiality and at a higher compositional level, and something that you/we/they don’t like, because it’s too trivial/superficial. But the genre is always the same, right?

Between AOR rock and seven hundred other styles of rock music, I would also place AOR rock at the bottom of the rankings, but for me, having listened to it, it’s a decent pop rock album. And pop rock aims to be radio-friendly, it aims to be FM pop rock, so it aims to be AOR rock. Rather, the problem lies with pomp rock or arena rock, sub-genres that deviate due to the decay of genres like epic rock and progressive... but "arena," despite the title, is neither an epic album nor arena rock. It is simply a pop rock album.

I listened to the entire discography of Asia, and since when I review something I demand a quality from myself that in Italian is called SERIETA', I listened to it again and again and again... so I compared it, to have the right point of reference, with some classic prog, with other prog from the 80s, with Toto, and with early Bon Jovi. If I give three stars to Arena, it’s not because, after all these nauseating listens, my brain has literally melted, but rather because, in my opinion, this album IS A DECENT POP ROCK ALBUM.

never call him by name (daniel, or 'dee'): he might kill for it (he said this to the interviewer years ago from metal hammer). only his mother can.

I have a parent who would watch any Nazi or fascist as long as they have a horse, a bit of sand, and a jerk with two guns at their hips. And as you, as can be inferred from the first sentence of your review, well know, dear Happypippo, there’s not much to be happy about...
