John Cale & Terry Riley The Church Of Anthrax

I don’t think many people know Riley. I agree that the early Weather were - or sought to be - avant-garde; without a doubt, the research on timbre is the keystone of the early albums. Saying that Riley had his golden period with Cage, Glass, and Young seems a bit simplistic to me, as we’re talking about a very long timeframe (assuming we can even call it a golden period for Cage; I believe he only received the recognition he deserved in the last 10-15 years of his life), and each of these three had their moment independently of the others, in a chronological sense. Glass, I’d say, even in the 80s. Moreover, claiming that his way of playing the organ inspired raga doesn’t seem correct to me; rather, it might be the opposite... Anyway, I understand what you meant; there was certainly no comparison, just a willingness to contextualize the two figures.

In the first six lines you spout nonsense after nonsense. In the rest of the review, you lift yourself a bit more, although the view of the album is somewhat personal and I don’t entirely share it. But that's a matter of perspective. I haven't listened to Academy in peril; as Ima said, it seemed a bit disjointed and very disconnected to me. It is, in its own way, the manifesto of an era that sought - and perhaps saw a glimmer - something "new" or vaguely original, that had never been heard and especially conceived before.

I mean, let me understand, do you really find it funny or even vaguely rewarding to write like this? And don’t tell me you can only do it this way, because otherwise you would have stopped at second grade, or you would be illiterate. It’s more likely that you do it on purpose, but I can’t understand what’s beautiful or noteworthy about all this. It makes me laugh that at a time when there’s so much discussion about improving the site, not making it like Facebook, pages and pages of artists are ruined with vague reviews written by users who dedicate them to other users (sic), not to mention the incredibly boring definitions that only serve to give the classic fifteen minutes of fame. So someone who accidentally stumbles upon Debaser finds themselves staring at the review of Magical Mystery Tour while perhaps looking for some serious info, and ends up reading a bunch of garbled psycho-pretentious nonsense. But I realize that this last point is just hot air and doesn't matter much. What I can't understand instead is how one can entertain themselves with this childish nonsense. Bye.

Had I posted it already? I don't know.. anyway, a way of understanding music and sounds that unfortunately very few have followed. The simplicity and intelligence of this man are astonishing to me.

Well, this is a heavy load, and I'm waiting for Ima to know what she thinks, maybe Lec will drop by too. I have the record; I would have liked to talk about it, but I was afraid of rambling on the usual clichés, a fear that - unfortunately - you have confirmed with this review. I believe there was so much more to say about this record, just like with The Payback and the JB from the early 70s, and I think that's also the reason why after a million reviews, no one had yet talked about these albums. It's true that black music isn't that widespread here, not like white rock at least. Anyway, I'll finish this ramble by saying that the record is very beautiful, the JBs sound divine; perhaps the downside is that it's a bit long. I don't really like the Latin version of "Please Please," but I repeat, I haven't listened to it very closely.
